Chapter 9 - The Zurich Ultimatum

The screen of Victoria’s phone cast a harsh, bluish light across her face as Marcus Thorne’s stern expression filled the small display. The ambient noise of the hotel lounge seemed to recede entirely, leaving only the steady hum of the refrigeration units behind the bar.
"Marcus, you’ve known me for over a decade," Victoria said, forcing her voice to remain level, though a subtle tremor betrayed her composure. "You know this entire restructuring is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our corporate strategy. If you process this dissolution without board consensus, you’re exposing yourself to immediate disbarment."
Marcus didn't blink. He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, looking down at the document open on his desk before looking directly back into the camera lens.
"My only fiduciary duty, Victoria, is to the primary settlor of the trust—Camilla Sterling," Marcus replied smoothly, his tone clinical and unyielding. "She has presented undeniable forensic proof of systematic asset diversion totaling over nine million dollars across multiple unregulated foreign entities. Under Swiss civil law, that constitutes an immediate freeze of all connected operational privileges."
Julian stepped into the frame of the front-facing camera, his face pale and strained. "Marcus, listen to me. If the accounts freeze, the European logistics merger collapses by morning. Thousands of jobs across three continents vanish overnight. Surely there’s a compromise—a quiet arbitration where we can restructure the debt without detonating the entire holding company."
"The time for arbitration passed when your wife authorized the transfer of the primary Swiss logistics accounts to an offshore Cayman holding last Tuesday," Marcus stated, tapping a pen against his leather desk blotter. "The waiver is currently sitting in your email inbox, Julian. All it requires is a digital signature from both of you to initiate a controlled, orderly wind-down instead of a catastrophic bankruptcy."
Victoria snatched the phone closer to her face, her eyes narrowing. "And if we refuse to sign? What then?"
"Then at 8:00 AM Swiss time, my office transmits the entire dossier directly to the international regulatory commission and the criminal fraud division in Zurich," Marcus answered calmly. "At that point, control passes entirely out of our hands and into the judicial system. You won't just lose the company, Victoria. You’ll be facing extradition proceedings before the end of the month."
The screen flickered slightly as a secondary prompt overlaid the video call, displaying a binding legal waiver with two empty signature boxes glowing in bright, accusing red.
Julian stared at the glowing lines on the screen, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid breaths. He reached out with a trembling finger, hovering just millimeters above the glass.
"Julian, don't you dare," Victoria hissed, grabbing his wrist with terrifying force. "If we sign that waiver, we hand over everything. We walk away penniless."

Suddenly, the screen of the phone went black as the video call was forcefully terminated from the server end, replaced instantly by a silent, incoming emergency text message from an unknown number containing only a single GPS coordinate in downtown Geneva.
