Chapter 13 - The Signature Line

The interior of the town car was dead silent save for the rhythmic swish of the windshield wipers clearing away the relentless Parisian rain. The phone on the leather seat continued to vibrate insistently, its glowing screen flashing an urgent warning banner from the Swiss federal prosecutor’s office: Incoming Subpoena Notice.

Victoria’s hand hovered above the thermal signature line of the retrocession waiver. Her pen tip touched the paper, leaving a tiny dot of black ink, but she froze, unable to draw the first stroke of her name.

"If I sign this," Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate vulnerability that had never surfaced during all their corporate board meetings, "we walk away with absolutely nothing. No shares, no properties, no control over the empire we spent years expanding."

"You walked away from your integrity the day you decided to forge my signature on the primary trust documents, Victoria," Camilla said, her voice remaining impossibly calm, anchored by an unshakeable sense of moral clarity. "What you are relinquishing isn't yours to keep. It never was."

Julian looked up from his hands, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow. He reached across the console, gently placing his hand over Victoria’s trembling fingers holding the pen.

"Just sign it, Victoria," Julian said softly, his voice defeated. "There’s nothing left to save. If we fight this any further, we aren't just losing a company—we’re going to prison."

Victoria turned her head sharply to look at her husband, searching his face for a flicker of the ambition and drive that had once drawn her to him. Instead, she found only empty resignation. With a sharp, shuddering breath, she pressed the pen down and dragged it across the paper, executing the final signature that legally dismantled their entire corporate empire in a matter of seconds.

Camilla reached out, her gloved fingers sliding the signed document back into her leather folder with quiet precision. She didn't smile, nor did she gloat; she simply secured the clasp of the folder with a soft click.

The town car smoothly slowed down, pulling up alongside the curb of a brightly lit private aviation hangar situated on the outskirts of the city, where a twin-engine Gulfstream jet sat idling on the tarmac, its turbine engines whining softly against the damp night air.

"The jet is fueled and cleared for your immediate return to Chicago," Camilla said without looking at them, her hand resting on the handle of her Louis Vuitton bag as the car door clicked open automatically from the outside. "Your personal belongings have already been forwarded to your primary residence."

Julian stared blankly out the open door toward the waiting aircraft, realizing that their exile was absolute and complete. But as Victoria slowly slid out of the car onto the wet tarmac, her phone screen lit up once more, displaying a final, unencrypted text message from an unknown sender that stopped her dead in her tracks.
