Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

The rain began to streak against the towering glass windows of the hotel lounge, casting long, distorted shadows across the Persian rugs. The high-ceilinged room was virtually empty, save for a single corner table where Julian sat staring into a lukewarm cup of black coffee. Across from him, the ledger tablets glowed with forensic accounting readouts that painted an undeniable, devastating portrait of systematic financial draining.
Victoria stood by the rain-streaked window, her phone pressed tightly to her ear, listening to the hollow, rhythmic ringing of an unanswered voicemail at their corporate headquarters in Chicago.
"They aren't picking up," Victoria muttered, turning around with a look of genuine panic. "The entire finance department's lines are going straight to automated disconnects. She actually locked us out of the servers."
Julian rubbed his temples, a dull, throbbing headache building behind his eyes. "I tried to warn you months ago, Victoria. You pushed her too hard. Every time she suggested downsizing or auditing the lifestyle expenses, you laughed it off and bought another luxury asset."
"I was positioning us for the merger!" Victoria shot back, her voice rising before she caught herself and lowered it to a fierce whisper. "If we don't close the European acquisition by Friday, the board will vote us out of our own holding company. Your mother knows this. She’s actively sabotaging her own bloodline out of spite."
"No," a calm voice echoed from the archway.
Camilla walked into the lounge, having shed her trench coat to reveal a sharp, dark cashmere sweater. She carried a single manila folder, which she set down on the table between them with deliberate slowness.
"I am not sabotaging my bloodline, Victoria. I am cutting out the cancer that has been feeding on it," Camilla said, pulling out a chair and sitting down without waiting for an invitation.
Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Mom, please. Just tell us what it’s going to take to fix this. Do you want us to step down from the board? Do you want control of the properties back? Name your terms."
Camilla opened the manila folder, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table. It wasn’t a contract or a settlement offer; it was a simple, itemized list of every unauthorized wire transfer made from her personal medical trust over the past twenty-four months, complete with Victoria’s digital signature authorizing each transaction.
"I don't want your titles, Julian, and I certainly don't want your apologies," Camilla said quietly, her eyes fixed on Victoria. "I want every single cent returned to the origin account by midnight, or the financial crimes division of the federal prosecutor's office in Zurich gets this complete dossier."

Victoria’s eyes scanned the paper, and for the first time since they had arrived in Europe, the color completely vanished from her lips. She slowly lowered herself into the adjacent chair, her fingers trembling as she picked up the document.
