Chapter 1 - The Shattered Threshold

The red wine bled across the pristine white tiles of the luxury living room, a jagged puddle of dark crimson surrounding the glittering shards of a broken vintage bottle. Julian stood over the mess, his chest heaving beneath his tight black shirt. His dark hair was slightly tousled, matching the aggressive fury twisting his thirty-year-old features. A few feet away stood Clara, his thirty-year-old blonde wife, dressed impeccably in a grey patterned dress accented by a sleek black bow and a matching headband. She held her coat and handbag with a chilling, statuesque calm, the fresh red mark of a slap stark against her pale cheek.

Seated quietly on the expensive grey sofa in the background, Julian’s mother, Martha, calmly sipped her Earl Grey tea from a porcelain cup, watching the domestic warfare unfold with cold indifference. Julian stepped closer, invading Clara’s personal space, his finger jabbing violently toward her face as his voice cracked with absolute contempt.

"Either you go clean my mother's apartment right now or tomorrow I'm asking for a divorce!" Julian shouted, spittle flying as his rage peaked.

Clara did not flinch. She did not cry. Her breathing remained steady, a masterclass in restrained emotion. She tilted her chin up slightly, the defiant smirk on her lips driving him closer to the edge.

"Fine," Clara replied, her voice soft, level, and entirely devoid of fear. "Give me the keys to her apartment."

Julian snatched the keys from his pocket and thrust them into her outstretched hand, his expression twisting into a sneer of petty triumph.

"That's more like it," Julian muttered, snatching them back for a split second before dropping them into her palm.

Clara didn't wait. She turned on her heel, the keys cold and heavy in her hand, and began walking toward the grand front door. Behind her, Julian stormed out through the large double doors, abandoning the ruined floor. As Clara reached for the brass handle, Martha cleared her throat loudly from the couch.

"Don't bother looking in the bedroom, dear," Martha called out, her voice dripping with venom. "You won't find my jewelry box. You'll find my safe, and the combination is your wedding date—the day you ruined our lives."
