Chapter 2 - The House of Ghosts

The heavy wooden door of Martha’s downtown apartment clicked shut behind Clara, sealing her inside a space that smelled heavily of mothballs, old cedar, and suppressed resentment. The apartment was a sprawling relic of mid-century wealth, shadowed and suffocating, exactly as Martha had left it when she moved into Julian and Clara's luxury high-rise six months prior. Clara stood in the dimly lit foyer, her grey patterned dress swishing against her calves as she adjusted the black headband framing her blonde hair. The red mark on her cheek still throbbed, a dull, pulsing reminder of Julian’s escalating violence, but her mind was entirely clear.
She walked past the velvet-draped living room straight toward the master bedroom at the end of the narrow hallway. Martha’s words echoed in her ears: the safe, the combination, the wedding date. It was a taunt, a psychological trap designed to make Clara feel like an intruder in her own marriage. Clara switched on the wall sconce, illuminating a heavy oak wardrobe tucked into the corner. Pushing the creaking wooden doors aside, she stared at the blank floral wallpaper lining the back. She pressed her fingertips against the paper, feeling the cold, hard outline of a concealed metal panel.
With steady fingers, Clara entered the numbers of the day she had walked down the aisle with Julian. A heavy mechanical clunk resonated through the bedroom wall, followed by a soft pneumatic hiss as the safe door popped open a quarter of an inch. Clara pulled it wide, expecting to see family heirlooms, old deeds, or perhaps hidden bank accounts detailing Julian's financial missteps. Instead, the beam of her phone flashlight caught a thick stack of manila folders labeled with unfamiliar names, resting neatly beneath a ledger bound in cracked leather.

She reached inside, her gloved hand brushing against a cold, metallic object tucked deep in the back corner of the lower shelf. Pulling it out into the dim light, her breath hitched. It was a heavy, professional-grade passport scanner, still caked in fine grey dust, alongside three distinct foreign passports bearing Julian’s face, each issued under a completely different alias.
