Chapter 13 - The Queen’s Gambit

The afternoon sun cast long, golden beams across the sleek glass facade of the Sterling & Vance skyscraper, illuminating the quiet tension inside the private penthouse office on the top floor. Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the ant-like movement of traffic on the bustling streets far below. The grey patterned dress and black bow felt like armor now—symbols of a battle won, but a war not yet entirely finished.

A soft knock echoed at the office door, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a thick leather-bound dossier under his arm. He walked over to the mahogany desk, placing the file down with a soft thud.

"The asset freeze on Martha's Swiss accounts just went through," Marcus said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Her primary holding corporation has been successfully transferred into your name, exactly as stipulated in that collateral agreement."

Clara turned away from the window, walking slowly toward the desk. "And Martha?" she asked calmly.

"She tried to board a private charter flight to Zurich an hour ago," Marcus replied with a thin, satisfied smile. "Federal marshals intercepted her at the private aviation tarmac. She's currently being detained for questioning regarding her role in Julian's shell company network."

Clara nodded slowly, sitting down in the high-backed leather executive chair that had belonged to her husband only hours before. She opened the dossier Marcus had brought, scanning the complex web of real estate holdings, offshore accounts, and corporate equities that now answered solely to her signature.

"They thought they could cage me," Clara murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "They thought a slap to the face and a spilled bottle of wine would be enough to break my spirit and drive me out with nothing."

"People who rely on intimidation always underestimate quiet resilience," Marcus noted, stepping back toward the door. "What's your next move, Clara? You control the board, you own the assets, and Julian is facing twenty years in federal prison. It's over."

"It's not over until the foundation is completely clean, Marcus," Clara said, looking up from the dossier with piercing clarity. "Julian and Martha were just the figureheads. There was someone else advising them on the legal structuring of those offshore trusts—someone whose name hasn't appeared on any of the corporate documents yet."

Marcus paused with his hand on the doorknob, his expression tightening as he processed her words. "Who?" he asked sharply.

Before Clara could answer, the secure intercom on the desk chimed loudly, interrupting the quiet of the penthouse suite. The voice of the front desk receptionist crackled through the speaker, trembling with obvious nervousness.

"Mrs. Sterling? There's... there's someone in the lobby insisting on seeing you immediately," the receptionist said. "He says he's your husband's primary legal counsel, and he has a court-stamped injunction signed by a federal judge."

Clara exchanged a quick, sharp glance with Marcus, feeling a sudden chill sweep through the room. She pressed the intercom button and spoke with absolute, unyielding calm.

"Send him up," Clara said. "Let's see what else my family has left to lose."
