Chapter 3 - The Passport Trail

Clara stared at the three foreign passports resting in her palm, the artificial blue light of her phone screen casting harsh shadows across her face. The names printed on the documents were entirely foreign to her—Arthur Vance, David Miller, and Julian Sterling—yet the photographs were unmistakably her husband. Each passport showed valid travel visas stamped within the past twelve months, contradicting Julian's frequent claims of being grounded in the city due to corporate restructuring and lagging real estate deals.
The silence of the old apartment felt heavy, pressing down on her shoulders as she processed the depth of the deception. Julian had built an entire alternate life right beneath her nose, financed by funds she had previously assumed were tied up in venture capital. She flipped open the cracked leather ledger next, scanning columns of dense financial transactions. Huge sums of cash were being funneled through offshore accounts into a corporate entity she had never heard of: Vanguard Holdings.
A sharp scratch at the front door made Clara freeze instantly. She snapped the safe shut, the heavy metal door clicking silently into place, and tucked the passports securely into the inner pocket of her handbag. Walking swiftly back to the foyer, she peered through the peephole into the dim, amber-lit hallway of the apartment building. An elderly man in a faded gray maintenance uniform stood outside, holding a clipboard and muttering to himself as he tapped heavily on the adjacent door before shuffling away down the carpeted corridor.
Exhaling slowly, Clara realized she had only bought herself a limited amount of time before Julian or Martha checked in to verify her progress. She needed physical proof, something she could copy, photograph, or smuggle out without raising immediate suspicion. She returned to the bedroom, reopened the safe, and pulled out the top manila folder. The label on the tab read: Asset Liquidation - Project Mirage.
Inside were architectural blueprints of a coastal estate located three hundred miles away, along with a signed bill of sale dated just one week prior. The buyer’s signature at the bottom of the document wasn’t Julian’s. It belonged to Martha Sterling, granting her sole ownership of a sprawling beachfront property paid for entirely in liquid cash. A cold realization washed over Clara. The apartment wasn't just a dusty storage unit; it was the administrative headquarters of a systematic plan to strip their marital assets clean.

As she reached for her phone to photograph the final page of the bill of sale, the screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown private number. Hesitating for a brief second, Clara swiped to answer, pressing the phone tightly against her ear as a low, distorted voice whispered through the speaker.
