Chapter 9 - The Siege at Dawn

"They're here," Arthur whimpered, his head dropping forward as fresh tears mixed with the drying blood on his cheek. "Julian's private security team. They track every server access ping in real-time."
Marcus didn't hesitate. His fingers flew across the keyboard of the battered laptop, downloading torrents of encrypted financial data onto the specialized flash drive as the progress bar crept steadily toward completion: 87%... 92%... 98%...
"Hurry!" Clara urged, her eyes fixed on the heavy office door as the sound of boots grew louder, stopping just outside the shattered entryway.
With a final, sharp click, the progress bar hit 100%. Marcus ripped the flash drive from the USB port, sliding it securely into his breast pocket just as a heavy tactical flashbang grenade was tossed violently through the shattered doorway into the office.
"Get down!" Marcus shouted, tackling Clara behind the overturned mahogany desk just as the flashbang detonated with a blinding white flash and an earth-shattering concussive roar that rattled the windows in their frames.
Smoke billowed thick and acrid through the room, stinging their eyes and throats. Through the haze, heavy tactical silhouettes pushed through the doorway, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the room with tactical precision.
"Clear!" shouted a gruff voice from the center of the tactical team. "Target is secure. Grab the accountant and sweep the perimeter."
Clara pressed her back hard against the underside of the desk, her breathing controlled and shallow, holding her handbag tightly against her chest. She glanced sideways at Marcus, who was silently unholstering a secondary compact firearm from his ankle rig. He gave her a subtle, reassuring nod, his eyes locked on the boots of a tactical operator stepping directly toward their hiding spot.
Just as the tactical operator leaned down to peer around the edge of the overturned desk, Marcus fired a single, perfectly aimed shot through the wood paneling. The operator grunted, dropping his rifle and collapsing backward onto the floor.
Marcus vaulted over the desk instantly, grabbing the fallen operator's submachine gun and firing suppressive rounds toward the doorway, driving the remaining tactical team back into the hallway. "Move, Clara! Now!" Marcus yelled over the deafening chatter of gunfire.
Clara sprang to her feet, stepping over the debris and sprinting toward the rear emergency exit of the office, which opened directly onto a secondary spiral staircase leading down to the alleyway behind the warehouse. As they burst out into the cool, gray light of early dawn, the heavy wail of approaching police sirens echoed through the industrial district, growing louder with every passing second.
They reached the waiting sedan just as the first flashing red and blue lights illuminated the corner of the brick building. Marcus unlocked the doors remotely, sliding into the driver's seat as Clara yanked open the passenger door and dived inside.
As Marcus floored the accelerator, sending the sedan screaming down the damp alleyway, Clara's phone vibrated violently in her handbag. She pulled it out, looking at the screen. It was a live video feed originating from the security cameras inside her own luxury penthouse living room.

On the screen, Julian stood over the shattered red wine puddle on the pristine white tiles, smashing a porcelain vase against the wall while Martha watched calmly from the sofa, holding a folded legal document stamped with an emergency asset seizure warrant addressed directly to Clara.
