Chapter 8 - The Crimson Office

Clara and Marcus froze instantly in the dim hallway, their instincts locking down all movement as the echoes of the muffled scream faded into the oppressive silence of the warehouse. Marcus drew a sleek, matte-black suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster with practiced, silent efficiency, motioning for Clara to stay flat against the brick wall.

With a swift, calculated kick, Marcus slammed his boot against the heavy wooden door of Arthur Vance's office, sending it crashing open against the interior wall.

The scene inside was a nightmare of corporate violence. The office was thoroughly ransacked; filing cabinets had been overturned, their contents scattered like confetti across a stained carpet. In the center of the room, a massive mahogany desk lay on its side, surrounded by broken porcelain from a shattered coffee mug and dark splatters of fresh blood. Tied securely to an office chair with heavy plastic zip-ties was Arthur Vance himself—his glasses smashed, a deep gash bleeding freely from his temple, and his chest heaving with terrified breaths.

Standing over him, holding a heavy iron paperweight, was a heavily tattooed enforcer wearing a black leather jacket. The enforcer spun around at the sudden intrusion, his eyes widening in shock as he raised a silenced automatic pistol directly toward Marcus.

Before the enforcer could pull the trigger, Marcus fired twice with surgical precision. The suppressed pops of the weapon echoed softly in the enclosed space, and the enforcer dropped his weapon, collapsing heavily onto the blood-stained carpet beside the overturned desk.

Clara stepped into the room, her eyes scanning the devastation without a single flinch. She walked past the fallen enforcer straight toward Arthur Vance, who was shaking violently in his chair, his eyes wide with absolute horror.

"Arthur," Clara said, her voice cutting through the heavy air with terrifying calm. "Look at me."

The accountant blinked frantically through his shattered spectacles, blood dripping down his cheek and staining his pale collar. "Clara? What... what are you doing here? Julian said you were—"

"Julian lied," Clara interrupted, leaning down close to his face. "Just like he lied to you about wiping your syndicate debt. Look at the man on the floor, Arthur. That’s Julian's cleanup crew. The moment you finished transferring those funds to Martha's offshore accounts, you weren't a partner anymore. You were a loose end."

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry as he stared at the lifeless body of the enforcer just feet away. "The... the encryption keys," Arthur stammered, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. "They're on... on the secure server. Partition drive C. But... but you need Julian's master cryptographic key to download the root files."

Marcus stepped forward, kneeling beside the terrified accountant and holding up a specialized flash drive with a built-in biometric scanner. "We don't need Julian's key, Arthur," Marcus said smoothly, plugging the drive into the side of the battered office laptop resting on the floor. "We just need your admin credentials to bypass the firewall."

Arthur nodded frantically, whispering a rapid sequence of alphanumeric characters into Marcus's ear just as the heavy metal warehouse door downstairs slammed open with a deafening crash, followed by the heavy, echoing sound of multiple pairs of boots storming up the iron staircase.
