Chapter 1 - The Shattered Porcelain

The grand gallery of the Metropolitan Antiquities Museum echoed with the hollow, suffocating sounds of panic. Crystal chandeliers hung overhead like frozen tears, casting shimmering reflections across the polished marble floors where the elite of New York City had gathered for the annual archival benefit gala. Five-year-old Lily stood frozen beside the marble pedestal, her little green party dress dusted with white ceramic shards. In her small, trembling hand, she clutched a single, jagged piece of the ancient Ming vase that had just pulverized upon the floor. Her brown hair, tied neatly in a half-up bow, bobbed slightly as she drew in a sharp, terrified breath.
Elena, her mother, stepped forward in her sweeping red sequin evening gown, diamond jewelry catching the harsh gallery light. Her dark hair was pulled back in an intricate updo, accentuating the sharp, unforgiving angle of her jaw.
"Look what you did!" Elena snapped sharply, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of terrified guests.
Before Lily could blink, Jonathan, her forty-two-year-old father, dropped to his knees in his immaculate navy blue three-piece suit. His short dark hair was slightly damp at the temples, and his clean-shaven face remained remarkably restrained despite the chaos. His fingers brushed against a heavy brown envelope resting on the floor, sealed tightly with a thick crimson blob of wax.
"Don't touch that!" a voice roared from behind him.
Victor, a forty-five-year-old man in a charcoal grey suit and black turtleneck, lunged forward. His grey hair caught the amber glow of the emergency lights as he aggressively grabbed Jonathan’s wrist, his fingers digging into the expensive fabric of the custom suit.
"You know you had to pad marself," Victor growled, his face twisting with raw desperation.
Jonathan stared up at him with cold, calculated stillness. "The padding was never yours to claim, Victor."
With a sudden, violent shove, Victor sent Jonathan crashing backward. The impact shattered a nearby glass display case, sending razor-sharp shards raining down across the hardwood floor. Elena shrieked, rushing forward with blind fury.
"I was stocking you and hers!" Elena screamed angrily, lunging at her husband.
Jonathan instinctively pushed her away. Elena lost her footing on the polished tiles, falling hard near a cluster of flickering candles and floral arrangements. Without missing a beat, Jonathan scrambled across the shattered glass, scooped little Lily into his arms, and snatched the brown envelope from the floor. As he pulled her close, a brilliant, blinding golden light erupted from the wax seal, illuminating the entire hall.
Elena slowly pushed herself up from the floor, staring directly at him. Her eyes had completely transformed, glowing with an unnatural, terrifying white light that cast long, grotesque shadows against the ancient stone walls.
Jonathan held the glowing envelope tighter against his chest, his gaze locking onto his wife’s glowing visage.
"The secret ends tonight," Jonathan whispered.

He turned and bolted toward the heavy mahogany service doors, plunging into the dark, rain-slicked alleyway behind the museum, leaving the gala guests screaming in terror behind them.
