Chapter 9 - The Golden Shield

The bullet fell with a dull, metallic ping against the concrete, rolling a few inches before stopping near Jonathan’s boot. The golden barrier shimmering around Lily expanded outward in a dome of warm, radiant light, pushing the advancing tactical operatives back several paces and coating their carbon-fiber armor in a web of crackling energy.
Vance stumbled backward, shielding his eyes from the blinding brilliance. "What kind of anomaly is this? Secure the perimeter! Use the EMP charges!" he roared over the chaotic feedback screaming through the operatives' comms units.
Inside the glowing dome, Jonathan dropped to his knees, frantically checking Lily over. Her green party dress was dusted with soot, but her skin was warm, glowing with a healthy, natural vitality that had been absent just moments before. The amber document in her hand had dissolved entirely, its essence absorbed directly into her veins, leaving her eyes shining not with the cold, unnatural white of the conditioned vessel, but with a deep, calm emerald green.
"Daddy, I'm okay," Lily whispered, her small arms wrapping around his neck. "The bad thoughts are gone. Mommy's coming back."
Jonathan looked across the room. Elena was no longer kneeling in agony. The white light had completely vanished from her eyes, replaced by her natural, dark-brown irises. She blinked rapidly, taking in her surroundings with a look of profound disorientation, her hands trembling as she touched her face.
"Jonathan...?" Elena’s voice was weak, cracked from hours of disuse, but entirely human. "Where... what happened to the gala?"
"You're safe, Elena. We're getting you out of here," Jonathan called out, his voice filled with a fierce, protective resolve.
Before they could move, one of the tactical operatives hurled a small, cylindrical device across the room—an electromagnetic pulse charge designed to fry all electronic systems and neural implants within a fifty-foot radius. The device hit the floor near the master terminal, its LED indicator flashing a frantic red.
"Get down!" Jonathan yelled, throwing himself over Elena and Lily as the EMP charge detonated.
A silent shockwave of blue energy ripped through the vault. The master terminal console exploded in a shower of sparks and black smoke, its screens going completely dark. The humming quantum server racks powered down one by one, plunging the cavernous chamber into an eerie, suffocating silence.
The golden barrier around Lily flickered violently and then shattered into a million sparkling fragments that drifted down like dust in the dim emergency lighting.

Vance stepped forward through the settling smoke, his sidearm raised and pointed directly at Elena’s head. "The system purge failed. Now, the foundation reclaims its property."
