Chapter 3 - The Curator's Ultimatum

The rain drummed a frantic rhythm against the corrugated metal roof overhead as Marcus stepped forward into the dim amber light of the alley. His grey trench coat was soaked through, and his gloved hands gripped the iron tire iron with practiced ease. Marcus had been Elena’s closest confidant within the archival board, a man who always wore a polite smile at charity galas while quietly orchestrating the acquisition of stolen antiquities.

"End of the line, Jonathan," Marcus said, his voice dangerously calm over the sound of the storm. "You really thought you could walk out of the grand gallery with the foundation’s birth certificate? The board invested millions in keeping those secrets buried."

Jonathan shifted Lily slightly in his arms, feeling her small frame shiver against his chest. He kept his body positioned defensively, shielding her from the looming threat. "The board didn't invest, Marcus. They extorted. Every name on that ledger is tied to the disappearance of the original research team back in ninety-eight, including my father."

Marcus laughed, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the wet brick. "Your father made his choice when he tried to whistleblow. Just like Elena made her choice when she signed the compliance waiver. Hand over the envelope, Jonathan, and maybe we let the little girl walk away unharmed."

Lily whimpered softly, pressing her face into the crook of Jonathan’s neck. The sound triggered something primal and fierce within him. He reached inside his jacket, pretending to slide his hand toward the inner pocket where the glowing brown envelope rested. Marcus tensed, raising the tire iron higher, anticipating a physical confrontation.

Instead, Jonathan lunged sideways, not toward Marcus, but directly at a rusted electrical junction box mounted to the brick wall. With a sharp kick of his heel, he smashed the metal housing open, exposing a tangle of high-voltage wiring that powered the alley’s security lighting. Before Marcus could react, Jonathan grabbed a live, exposed wire and hurled it into the standing puddle of water between them.

A blinding flash of electric blue light strobed through the alley, accompanied by a deafening crack of overloaded circuits. Marcus shrieked as the current surged through his wet boots, dropping the tire iron with a metallic clatter as he collapsed backward into the mud, his body spasming from the shock.

Jonathan didn't look back. He sprinted past the fallen curator, plunging headfirst down the concrete stairs leading into the abandoned subway station below. He swiped his work-issued transit pass at the rusted turnstile, dragging Lily through just as the emergency backup generators kicked in upstairs, bathing the station entrance in an eerie crimson glow.

As they descended into the dark, subterranean tunnels, the distant sound of Elena’s voice echoed down the stairwell, calling his name with a terrifying, inhuman resonance.
