Chapter 1 - The Terminal Reckoning

The fluorescent lights of the departure terminal hummed a sharp, sterile tune as Julian stood frozen beside the automated check-in kiosk. His green canvas jacket felt suddenly suffocating against his chest, the white shirt beneath damp with a cold sweat he refused to wipe away. Across the polished concrete floor, his mother Camilla stood like a statue carved from winter marble. Her long brown hair fell in sleek waves over the shoulders of her structured trench coat, and the heavy leather of her Louis Vuitton bag rested against her hip like dead weight.
Julian’s thumb shook slightly as it hovered over the glowing screen of his smartphone. The bright digital notification mocked him in bold, accusatory red lettering: Booking Cancelled.
Camilla’s eyes locked onto his with an unsettling, hollow calm. She took a deliberate step closer, her voice cutting through the ambient roar of rolling suitcases and distant gate announcements with chilling precision.
"You didn’t pay a single cent for this trip," Camilla said coldly.
Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Mom, everyone is already in Paris. Victoria is standing at the front desk right now waiting to check us into the penthouse. You can't just pull the rug out from under us like this over a disagreement about the portfolio."
"It is not a disagreement, Julian. It is theft disguised as filial devotion," Camilla replied, her tone dropping an octave. "Victoria planned an itinerary fit for royalty, funded entirely by my retirement and liquid assets, while treating me like an invisible luggage porter. I am done subsidizing your wife's social climbing."
"I understand," Camilla whispered a second later, her face softening into a mask of resolute finality as she looked down at her own device.
Julian watched in horror as her finger tapped the screen twice. A system warning box flashed amber.
"What did you just do?" Julian demanded, stepping forward.
"I pulled the foundation out from under the house of cards," she answered softly.
Just then, Julian’s phone rang. It was Victoria, her voice already drilling through the speaker before he could even press accept.
"Julian, where are you? The front desk says our reservation is flagged!"
May you like
Before Julian could answer, the screen of his phone went completely black, shutting down entirely.
