Chapter 5 - The Collateral Asset

The clock on the lobby wall clicked silently toward midnight, its amber digital numbers casting an eerie glow over the empty reception area. Victoria sat rigid in a wingback chair, her white blazer looking stark and funereal against the dark upholstery. Julian paced the length of the Persian rug, his boots clicking a steady, anxious rhythm against the wood floor.
"The transfer won't clear until American banking hours open tomorrow morning, and you know it," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a desperate, hushed register. "You’re setting us up for a trap we can’t legally outrun."
Camilla stood by the concierge desk, calmly replacing the silver flash drive into the secure lining of her Louis Vuitton bag. She didn't turn around immediately.
"You understood international wire protocols well enough when you drained my pension to fund your art acquisitions in Milan, Victoria," Camilla said without turning. "The banking system moves as fast as the authorities demand when fraud flags are raised."
Julian stopped pacing and grabbed the back of the chair opposite his mother. "Mom, look at me. Please. If the federal authorities get involved, the stock tanks instantly. Everything we spent our entire lives building—everything you built—collapses into Chapter 11 bankruptcy overnight. Is that really what you want? To burn your own legacy to the ground just to punish us?"
Camilla finally turned, her expression unreadable. "My legacy is not a portfolio of shell companies, Julian. My legacy was built on integrity, hard work, and mutual respect—three things that evaporated from this family the day Victoria convinced you to forge my signature on the primary estate titles."
Victoria gasped, leaning forward. "That was a legal proxy authorization! You verbally agreed to let us manage the estate consolidation while you were recovering from your hip surgery in Switzerland."
"I agreed to let you oversee it under direct supervision, not liquidate it to buy a private chalet in the Alps under your maiden name," Camilla replied, her voice cutting through Victoria’s defense like a scalpel.
Before Victoria could fire back, the door to the lounge swung open, and the sharp ring of a mobile phone shattered the heavy silence. It wasn't Julian’s phone or Victoria’s. It was Camilla’s device resting on the table.
Camilla picked it up, glancing at the caller ID. Her eyebrows arched slightly in mild surprise. She swiped to answer and placed it on speaker.
"Mrs. Sterling," a crisp, professional voice announced through the tiny speaker. "This is Director Vance from the international asset recovery bureau. We have intercepted an unauthorized outbound transfer of four point two million dollars originating from your corporate holding account to an offshore depository in the Cayman Islands, flagged under Victoria’s personal routing number."

Victoria froze, every breath caught in her throat.
