Chapter 6 - The Cayman Conduit

The digital clock on the lounge wall ticked forward another minute, the amber light pulsing like a dying heartbeat. The mention of the Cayman Islands hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Julian stared at his wife, his mouth slightly open, the betrayal washing over his features in a slow, agonizing wave.
"Four million? Victoria, what is that?" Julian asked, his voice cracking slightly, stripped of all its defensive bravado. "We agreed to liquidate the secondary portfolio, not—not stash corporate reserves offshore."
Victoria didn't look at him. Her eyes remained locked on Camilla’s phone, which still hummed softly on the table. She adjusted her posture with a desperate, practiced rigidity, trying to reclaim her professional armor.
"It’s a strategic hedging maneuver," Victoria said, her voice strained but defiant. "Every major multinational firm utilizes offshore repositories to protect liquid assets from sudden European market volatility. If Director Vance spent ten minutes looking at macroeconomic trends instead of bowing to domestic pressure, he’d see it’s standard procedure."
Director Vance’s voice cut through the room, dry and unimpressed. "Mrs. Sterling, standard procedure involves board resolutions, shareholder disclosures, and certified tax filings. None of which were attached to this midnight wire. In fact, our compliance officers confirm the receiving entity is a shell company registered yesterday afternoon under a fictitious charity name."
Camilla slowly slid the phone toward herself, tapping the screen to mute the speaker. She looked down at Victoria with a steady, unflinching gaze. "You didn't just borrow against my pension, Victoria. You were building an escape hatch."
"And can you blame me?" Victoria finally snapped, her composure cracking as she stood up abruptly, knocking her chair backward against the floorboards. "From the day I married into this family, I was treated like an opportunistic outsider! Every acquisition, every negotiation, every sleepless night spent saving your failing enterprises—I did it all while you sat in your Swiss villa playing the benevolent matriarch!"
Julian stepped between them, his hands trembling. "Victoria, stop it. Just stop talking."
"No, Julian, you wake up!" Victoria shouted, pointing a manicured finger at her husband. "Your mother was never going to hand over the reins. She was going to keep us dancing on a string until we were sixty years old, begging for an allowance to pay our own taxes!"
Camilla picked up her Louis Vuitton bag, slinging the strap over her shoulder with absolute composure. "The authorities have the routing numbers, Victoria. The escape hatch is welded shut."

Just as Camilla turned toward the private exit leading to the subterranean parking garage, Julian’s discarded phone suddenly lit up on the table, flashing an urgent incoming alert from an unknown international number.
