Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Departure

The subterranean parking garage of the grand Parisian hotel smelled of stale exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and old oil. The fluorescent overhead strips flickered intermittently, casting harsh, buzzing shadows across the rows of luxury sedans and empty concrete pillars. The black diplomatic town car sat waiting near the exit ramp, its engine purring with a quiet, expensive hum that echoed off the low ceiling.
Julian pushed open the heavy steel fire door, his green jacket pulled tight against the damp chill of the subterranean air. Victoria followed close behind, her heels clicking sharply against the oil-stained concrete, her white blazer pristine and entirely out of place in the grim industrial setting.
As they approached the idling sedan, the rear passenger door clicked open silently from the inside. Camilla sat inside the darkened cabin, bathed in the soft, amber glow of a reading light, calmly reviewing a physical stack of paper documents resting on her lap. She didn't look up as they approached.
"Get in," Camilla said simply, her voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority that left no room for debate.
Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second before ducking his head and sliding into the plush leather interior beside his mother. Victoria climbed in after him, pulling the heavy door shut with a solid, echoing thud that sealed them off from the outside world.
The interior of the car smelled faintly of cedar and expensive leather—the exact scent of Camilla’s private study in Geneva.
"You didn't have to send a diplomatic car to drag us across international borders like criminals, Mom," Julian said, his voice strained as he adjusted his collar. "We were ready to cooperate."
Camilla slowly turned a page of her document, finally raising her eyes to look at her son. The look in her eyes wasn't anger or malice; it was a profound, quiet disappointment that cut deeper than any shout.
"Cooperation implies a willingness to correct a mistake, Julian. What you and Victoria were preparing to do in that hotel lounge was finalize a wire transfer that would have stripped the family foundation of every remaining liquid asset before the morning bell," Camilla said evenly. "That isn't cooperation. That’s flight."
Victoria leaned forward from the opposite seat, her expression tightening into a hard, defensive mask. "And what you’re doing isn't protecting a legacy, Camilla—it’s an act of financial tyranny. You’re holding your own family hostage because you refuse to accept that the world has evolved past your old-fashioned way of doing business."
Camilla closed the document folder with a soft snap. She turned her gaze slowly toward Victoria, her expression chillingly calm.
"The world hasn't evolved past integrity, Victoria. People like you simply forgot how to earn what you consume," Camilla replied softly.
Before Victoria could fire back, the driver’s partition slid open slightly, and the chauffeur handed a sealed manila envelope back through the gap directly into Camilla’s waiting hand.

Camilla took the envelope, pulled out a single sheet of thermal paper, and glanced at the bold crimson text printed across the top before sliding it onto the seat between Julian and Victoria.
