Chapter 3 - The Cipher of Ownership

The silence in the hotel lobby grew heavy, broken only by the faint chime of an elevator bell in the distance. Victoria’s fingers locked around the edges of Julian’s smartphone until her knuckles turned white. Her sunglasses dangled awkwardly from her other hand, swinging slightly against the fabric of her white blazer. She stared down at the glowing display, reading the metadata over and over as if hoping the words would miraculously rearrange themselves into something favorable.
"A second registration? Under Camilla’s private holding?" Victoria whispered, the venom evaporating from her voice, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization of vulnerability. "This makes no sense. The asset transfer agreement signed last November clearly assigned all international lodging rights to the primary family trust, which I personally manage."
Camilla stepped closer to the counter, placing a leather-bound folio squarely on the mahogany wood. The embossed gold crest on the cover caught the sharp lobby lights. "You manage a shell, Victoria. You mistook the legal illusion of control for actual possession. My legal counsel filed the amendment dissolving the trust’s real estate provisions thirty-six hours ago, right after I saw the unauthorized withdrawals targeting my personal pension."
Julian stepped between them, his hands raised defensively. "Mom, wait. Let’s not do this here, in public. We can talk about the pension, we can restructure the accounts, but humiliating us in front of international clients is going to destroy our market standing."
"Your market standing is an illusion, Julian," Camilla said, looking at her son with a mixture of pity and exhaustion. "You’ve spent five years coasting on the inertia of my past success while letting your wife gamble our reserves on speculative real estate ventures in markets neither of you understands."
Victoria slowly raised her head, her initial shock hardening back into calculated resistance. She smoothed down the lapels of her blazer and adopted a chillingly polite corporate smile. "You think a hasty paperwork maneuver changes the binding contracts we executed in Zurich? You forget, Camilla, that my signature is on the operational permits for every single enterprise connected to this family name. Without me, your distribution channels freeze overnight."
Camilla didn't blink. She reached into her Louis Vuitton bag and pulled out a slim, silver flash drive, placing it gently beside the leather folio. "Distribution channels require inventory, Victoria. And as of noon today, every warehouse, shipping container, and supply chain contract has been reassigned to an independent cooperative entity."
Julian’s breath hitched. "You liquidated the supply chain?"
"I secured it," Camilla corrected him quietly. "There is a difference between destroying a legacy and saving what is left of it from parasites."

Victoria’s smile vanished instantly. She lunged forward to grab the flash drive, but the desk clerk stepped smoothly into her path, his hand hovering over the silent security alarm beneath the counter.
