Chapter 14 - The Terminal Departure

The cold wind sweeping across the private tarmac whipped Victoria’s hair across her face as she stepped out of the diplomatic town car. The turbine whine of the waiting Gulfstream jet vibrated through the wet concrete, loud and insistent. Julian followed closely behind her, his green canvas jacket soaked from the drizzle, his shoulders slumped under the crushing weight of their total defeat.

Before they could take a step toward the boarding stairs, Victoria stopped abruptly. The screen of her phone glowed fiercely in her hand, displaying a text message that had bypassed all corporate firewalls and international encryption blocks.

The Geneva archive vault has just been accessed by an unauthorized override code, the message read in stark, bold characters. All primary asset recovery protocols have been instantly reversed.

Victoria spun around, her eyes wide with shock, staring back into the darkened interior of the town car where Camilla still sat calmly holding her leather folio.

"What did you just do?" Victoria shouted over the roar of the jet engines, rushing back to the open car door. "The vaults—they just unlocked themselves. The recovery protocols have been reversed from an internal admin node!"

Camilla looked up slowly, her expression shifting from cold certainty to genuine, sharp confusion. She pulled her own phone from her trench coat pocket and tapped the screen, her brow furrowing deeply as she reviewed the real-time server diagnostics streaming from Geneva.

"That's impossible," Camilla said, her voice carrying a rare note of genuine alarm for the first time all evening. "The admin node requires both my physical biometric keycard and Marcus’s master authorization code simultaneously. Nobody else on earth possesses both."

Julian rushed up beside Victoria, grabbing the edge of the car door. "Mom, look at the server logs. Who just accessed the main registry?"

Camilla’s fingers flew across her screen, pulling up the master security feed from the Zurich archive vault. The high-definition camera angle showed the heavy steel doors of the underground vault standing wide open. But standing inside the secure terminal wasn't Marcus Thorne, nor was it any member of the corporate board.

A familiar figure stood calmly before the primary console, typing rapidly into the terminal with an expert familiarity that made the blood run cold in Julian’s veins. It was David—Camilla’s estranged younger brother and former chief operations officer, whom the family had legally bought out and banished to overseas exile a decade prior after he was caught embezzling from the pension fund.

David turned slowly toward the security camera lens, offering a slow, mocking smile directly into the recording device before lifting a small, encrypted USB drive and waving it slightly at the glass.

Camilla dropped her phone onto the leather seat, the color instantly draining from her face as the profound realization of a much deeper, more dangerous betrayal settled over the car.
