Chapter 7 - The Intercepted Protocol

The sudden vibration of Julian’s phone against the mahogany table broke the tense stillness of the lounge. Victoria lunged for it first, her fingers brushing the glass screen before Julian managed to snatch it away.
"Give me that," Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low as he backed away a step, his eyes darting across the incoming notification.
The screen displayed a high-priority encrypted message routing through a secure Zurich node. The sender wasn't a bank or a government bureau. It was an internal memo originating directly from Sterling Global Logistics—the very freight and shipping empire Camilla had spent forty years building from a single truck into a global powerhouse.
Julian read the first three lines aloud, his voice barely a whisper. "All international freight terminals currently operating under secondary management directives have been placed under federal receivership effective immediately. All active commercial vessels are ordered to anchor at nearest port pending forensic audit."
Julian dropped his hand, the phone slipping from his loose grip and clattering against the carpeted floor. He looked up at his mother, horror etched into every line of his face.
"You didn't just lock us out of our accounts, Mom," Julian said, the words feeling heavy and unreal in his mouth. "You triggered an emergency receivership on the entire corporate infrastructure. You've essentially killed the company."
Camilla stopped walking toward the exit. She turned back slowly, her expression devoid of anger, bearing only the profound weight of a lifetime of labor.
"I didn't kill the company, Julian. I put it into a medically induced coma to save it from the necrosis you and your wife were spreading," Camilla replied, her voice steady and resolute. "When a captain steers a ship directly onto the rocks to collect the insurance payout, the crew has a moral obligation to mutiny."
Victoria let out a bitter, humorless laugh, crossing her arms over her white blazer. "And you think the board of directors is going to thank you for this? The moment the New York stock exchange opens tomorrow morning, shareholders are going to panic. Shares are going to plummet to zero. You’re destroying your own net worth just to spite us."
"My net worth was never measured in stock tickers, Victoria," Camilla said coldly. "It was measured in the trust of the people who worked for me—the drivers, the warehouse managers, the logistics coordinators whom you and Julian treated like disposable numbers on a balance sheet over the last three years."
Camilla reached into her trench coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted keycard, tossing it onto the table near Julian’s feet.
"That keycard contains the master administrative override code," Camilla said quietly. "There is only one person in this room who knows the physical security password required to activate it before the market opens at 9:00 AM."

Both Julian and Victoria stared down at the small piece of plastic resting on the table, realizing instantly that the keycard was completely useless without the passphrase—a passphrase that only one living person possessed, and she wasn't planning on giving it away.
