Chapter 14 - The Final Counsel

The private elevator bell chimed softly, breaking the tense silence of the penthouse office. Clara remained seated behind the massive mahogany desk, her hands resting calmly on the polished surface, while Marcus stood quietly in the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows. The heavy glass double doors swung open, and a tall, impeccably tailored man in his late fifties stepped into the room. He wore a charcoal-grey bespoke suit, silver-rimmed glasses, and carried a leather briefcase under his arm. His face bore a calm, arrogant smirk that radiated absolute professional confidence.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Sterling," the man said smoothly, walking toward the desk without waiting for an invitation. "I am Victor Vance, senior legal counsel for the Sterling family trust and senior partner at Vance & Associates."

"Vance," Clara repeated, the name clicking instantly into place in her mind. "Arthur Vance's older brother. The architect behind the entire offshore legal framework Julian and Martha used to hide their assets."

Victor stopped a few feet from the desk, his smirk faltering slightly as he realized Clara wasn't intimidated by his reputation or his entrance. "A dramatic choice of words, Clara, but entirely inaccurate," Victor replied, placing his briefcase on the desk and snapping open the latches. "I am simply a legal advisor cleaning up the massive mess your erratic behavior has created for this corporation."

"My erratic behavior?" Clara asked, raising an eyebrow as a cold, dangerous smile touched her lips. "Your brother is currently cooperating with federal prosecutors, your co-conspirators are in holding cells, and Julian is facing twenty years behind bars. I'd call that a very successful morning."

Victor’s eyes narrowed behind his silver-rimmed glasses. He reached inside his briefcase and pulled out a single, thick document bearing a freshly embossed federal court seal. He slid it across the desk toward Clara.

"You may have seized the corporate accounts and frozen Martha's domestic trusts, Clara, but you missed the master holding entity registered in the Cayman Islands," Victor said, leaning forward and resting his palms on the edge of the desk. "That entity owns the real estate patents, the trademark licenses, and the primary revenue streams of Sterling & Vance. Without it, this corporation is an empty shell worth less than the paper it's printed on. And under international maritime law, that entity is currently held in an irrevocable trust assigned to me."

Clara looked down at the document, scanning the legal clauses with absolute focus. Marcus stepped out from the shadows, walking over to stand beside her chair, his eyes fixed on Victor with quiet intensity.

"You forgot one minor detail, Victor," Clara said softly, picking up the document and turning it over to reveal the final page.

Victor’s confident smirk flickered for a fraction of a second. "And what detail is that?" he challenged, adjusting his glasses.

"The Cayman Islands trust was established using capital funneled directly from corporate accounts embezzled without board approval," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave as she slid her phone across the desk, displaying a recorded phone conversation between Victor and Martha discussing the illegal asset transfer. "Which means under international financial compliance laws, that trust is considered the proceeds of criminal enterprise—and your signature as the certifying attorney makes you an active co-conspirator."

Victor stared at the phone screen, the color draining entirely from his face as the audio recording played his own voice detailing the embezzlement scheme. Before he could reach for his briefcase to grab the document, the private elevator doors opened again behind him, and two armed federal marshals stepped into the penthouse suite, their badges gleaming brightly under the harsh office lights.
