Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Wire

"Put the papers back, Clara," the distorted voice hissed through the phone, the audio carrying a strange, metallic echo that suggested the caller was using a frequency scrambler. "You're playing a game you've already lost."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs, but her voice remained chillingly controlled as she pressed the speaker harder to her ear. "Who is this?" she demanded, her eyes darting around the shadowed bedroom to ensure she was truly alone in the apartment.

"A friend who is tired of watching you walk into slaughterhouses," the voice replied before the line clicked dead with a sharp, robotic tone.

She pulled the phone away and stared at the screen. The call log showed no incoming number, just a string of encrypted characters. The realization that she was being watched—not just by Julian and Martha, but by someone else entirely—sent a shiver down her spine. Whoever was on the other end of that line knew her name, knew her location, and knew exactly what documents she was holding in her hands.

Clara quickly opened her camera app, snapping crisp, high-resolution photographs of every single page inside the Project Mirage folder. The blueprints detailed a heavily fortified modern mansion with multiple exits, private security perimeters, and a subterranean vault. It was a fortress designed to disappear behind, a place where someone could vanish from society without leaving a single trace behind.

She carefully placed the original documents back inside the safe, exactly as she had found them, locking the heavy steel door and spinning the combination dial. Her mind raced through the tactical implications of what she had just uncovered. Julian wasn't just talking about a divorce; he was orchestrating a calculated abandonment strategy designed to leave her legally destitute, socially isolated, and emotionally broken. The spilled wine, the staged argument, the slap across her face—it had all been a performance designed to push her out of the penthouse and into a position of weakness.

Stowing her handbag safely under her arm, Clara walked briskly toward the front door, slipping out into the hallway just as the elevator bell chimed softly at the end of the corridor. She stepped inside the stairwell, choosing to walk down the seven flights of stairs rather than risk being trapped in a small elevator car with anyone descending from the upper floors.

When she finally pushed open the heavy glass doors of the apartment building into the cool evening air, a sleek black sedan was idling by the curb. The tinted window rolled down halfway, revealing the sharp profile of a man wearing dark sunglasses, staring directly at her with an expression of quiet expectation.
