Chapter 9 - The Final Ultimatum

The legal documents slipped from Eleanor’s manicured fingers, fluttering softly to the plush carpet like fallen leaves. She stared at Judge Miller, then at Richard, and finally at Daniel and Ivy, who stood side-by-side in quiet solidarity. The formidable armor of wealth and intimidation had completely shattered around her, leaving only raw, desperate fury.
"This isn't over," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with venomous hatred. "You think a few corrupt judges and a spineless husband can strip me of my family? I will appeal this until my dying breath. I will make sure you never know a moment of peace!"
"Step out, Mrs. Vance," the two private security guards hired by the firm suddenly stepped forward, not at Eleanor’s command, but at Marcus’s sharp nod. They flanked her sides, their professional demeanor leaving no room for argument.
"Don't touch me! I’ll fire the lot of you!" Eleanor shrieked, batting the guard's hand away as they gently but firmly escorted her toward the hallway. Her frantic, angry cries echoed down the corridor until the heavy glass doors closed, sealing her out of the room completely.
The silence that followed was heavy, filled with the profound weight of a battle finally won.
Ivy let out a long, shaky breath, her knees suddenly weak. Daniel was there instantly, catching her by the waist and pulling her gently against his chest. She buried her face in his shoulder, tears of pure relief spilling over her lashes.
Lily looked up from her tablet, blinking her large green eyes. "Is the mean lady gone forever, Daddy?" she asked softly.
Daniel knelt down beside her, scooping the little girl up into his arms and burying his face in her dark curls. "Yes, sweetie. She’s gone. You’re safe. We’re all safe."
Judge Miller tipped his head respectfully to Daniel and Ivy before walking out with Marcus to review the remaining settlement logistics. Richard remained standing near the window, looking out over the city skyline with a quiet, melancholic expression.
"I’m sorry it took me thirty years to find my spine," Richard said without turning around. "I hope... in time, you can forgive me for standing by while she tore this family apart."
Ivy looked up from Daniel’s embrace, wiping her eyes. She walked over to Richard, her expression softening with unexpected grace. She placed a gentle hand on his arm. "Thank you for the truth, Richard. That’s all we ever really wanted."
Richard managed a faint, tired smile, nodding gratefully before turning to leave the office so the young family could finally have a moment alone.
Daniel wrapped both arms around Ivy and Lily, holding them close in the center of the quiet room. "We can finally start over," he whispered against Ivy’s hair. "A real home. Together."

Just as Ivy nodded, smiling through her tears, Daniel’s phone—which he had turned back on moments ago—suddenly buzzed with an urgent priority alert from an unknown number.
