Chapter 7 - The Corporate Trap

The silence in Marcus Vance’s office grew so heavy it felt suffocating. Daniel stared at his mother, his mind racing as the tactical implications of her threat hit him like a physical blow. His startup company, Vance Innovations, was currently on the verge of closing a massive multi-million-dollar acquisition deal with global tech conglomerate Apex Systems. Eleanor sat on the board of Apex through her late husband’s holdings. She held the swing vote.

"You wouldn't," Daniel whispered, his voice tight with controlled fury. "You would burn down my entire company just to control my child?"

"I built this family’s empire, Daniel, and I will dismantle every single brick of your life before I let some nobody from the suburbs ruin our bloodline," Eleanor replied, her voice sickeningly sweet. She stepped closer, lowering her voice so only he could hear. "Drop the custody fight, hand Lily over to my estate managers for proper raising, and I’ll sign off on the Apex acquisition today. Otherwise, I’ll leak fabricated embezzlement charges to the SEC by sundown."

Ivy overheard the whispered exchange, her breath hitching in her throat. She looked at Daniel, seeing the agonizing weight of the choice his mother had just forced upon him.

"Don't do it, Daniel," Ivy said, her voice shaking as she stepped forward to pull Lily closer to her side. "Don't sacrifice your life's work for us. We can run. We can go somewhere she’ll never find us."

"You aren't running anywhere, my dear," Eleanor said, turning her sharp gaze toward Ivy. "My private investigators have airports, bus terminals, and train stations flagged across three states. You are trapped."

Marcus stepped around the conference table, his legal authority finally cutting through the toxic atmosphere. "Mrs. Vance, extortion and witness tampering are federal felonies. Every word you just spoke was recorded by the firm’s automated transcription system."

Marcus tapped a blinking red light on the sleek conference phone sitting in the center of the table.

Eleanor’s smile faltered for the first time. She whipped her head around to look at the blinking light, then back at Marcus. A cold sweat visibly beaded along her hairline beneath her immaculate blonde styling.

"You’re bluffing," Eleanor hissed, though her voice lacked its previous ironclad certainty.

"Am I?" Marcus challenged, sliding a printed transcript out of the machine. "Section four of this document details your exact words regarding corporate blackmail and extortion. I am hitting send to the federal prosecutor's office right now."

Before Eleanor could signal her security guards to intervene, her designer handbag buzzed violently. She pulled out her private smartphone, her eyes scanning the incoming caller ID. The color vanished completely from her face as she answered the call.

"Yes?" Eleanor snapped. Her eyes widened in sheer horror as the voice on the other end spoke. "What do you mean, the board just voted to strip my voting shares?"
