Chapter 11 - The Ghost of the Past

Daniel stepped silently across the threshold of the subterranean vault, his hand instinctively reaching out to shield Ivy behind him. The small, windowless room was lined with floor-to-ceiling metal filing cabinets and illuminated by a single overhead brass lamp. Standing in the center of the room, frantically pulling stacks of yellowed parchment from an open safe, was a thin, gray-haired man in a tattered trench coat. He froze as his shoes scraped against the concrete floor.

"Who’s there?" the man rasped, turning around slowly.

As the man stepped into the light, Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. The face was older, weathered by decades of isolation and stress, but the striking emerald green eyes and sharp jawline were undeniable.

"Uncle Julian?" Daniel whispered, stepping forward in absolute disbelief. "You... you’re alive?"

Julian Vance dropped a handful of financial ledgers, his hollow eyes widening as he stared at Daniel. "Daniel? My god... look how much you’ve grown. You look so much like your father."

"Eleanor told us you died at sea twenty years ago," Ivy said, stepping out from behind Daniel with Lily clutching the hem of her jacket. "She told everyone you drowned."

"Eleanor didn't want me dead; she wanted me invisible," Julian laughed bitterly, running a trembling hand through his unkempt gray hair. He looked around frantically, grabbing a thick leather-bound journal from the open safe and clutching it against his chest. "She staged that boating accident because I discovered what she did to your mother’s family, Daniel. She didn't just steal a fortune—she committed murder."

The heavy silence in the vault felt like a physical weight. Daniel stepped closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "What are you talking about, Julian? Murder?"

"Your grandfather didn't die of a heart attack, Daniel. Eleanor poisoned him slowly over six months to seize control of the family trust before he could rewrite his will," Julian said, his voice shaking with long-suppressed terror. "And when I found the medical toxicologist reports in his desk, she tried to do the same to me. I had to fake my own death just to escape this house alive."

Ivy gasped, pulling Lily tightly against her hip. "That’s why she was so paranoid about everything. That’s why she destroyed my life—because she was terrified of anyone looking too closely at the Vance family legacy."

"She’s coming," Julian suddenly warned, his eyes darting toward the stone staircase overhead. "I tripped the silent master alarm when I opened the core safe. She knows someone is down here."

Before anyone could move toward the exit, the heavy thud of footsteps echoed down the stone corridor outside the vault door.
