Chapter 3 - The Safe Haven

The door of Daniel’s penthouse apartment clicked shut, locking out the noise and judgment of the outside world. The space was sleek, modern, and minimalist—a stark contrast to the chaotic whirlwind of emotions currently filling the hallway. Ivy stood awkwardly near the entryway, holding Lily tightly against her hip. The heavy white wedding dress felt like a leaden weight now, a reminder of a celebration that had violently unraveled into a family warzone.

"Put your things down wherever you want," Daniel said, setting his tuxedo jacket over the back of a leather armchair. He rolled up his white dress shirt sleeves, exposing forearms corded with tension. "You are safe here. No one knows this address except us."

Lily’s wide eyes darted around the unfamiliar room, taking in the towering glass windows that overlooked the glittering city skyline. "Is this our new house, Mommy?" she asked in a tiny voice, clutching her white headband.

"Just for tonight, sweetie," Ivy answered softly, kneeling to help the little girl out of her sparkly shoes. She looked up at Daniel, her eyes shadowed with exhaustion and profound fear. "Daniel, you don't understand what my mother is capable of. She didn't just chase me away six years ago. She has resources, lawyers, and a level of vindictiveness that destroys everything it touches."

Daniel walked over, kneeling beside them on the hardwood floor. He placed a warm, steady hand over Ivy’s trembling fingers. "Let her try. For six years, I was kept in the dark. She told me you left the country, that you took money to disappear. She forged documents, Ivy. I know how my mother operates."

Ivy gasped, pulling her hand back slightly. "You knew she was capable of that?"

"I suspected it after my father passed away and she took total control of the estate," Daniel explained, his expression dark. "When you vanished right after graduation, claiming you didn't love me and wanted a clean break, my gut told me it was a lie. But my mother presented a signed letter in your handwriting. She had it notarized."

"I never wrote any letter," Ivy whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "She told me you didn't want the baby, that you threatened to ruin my future if I kept you tied down. She drove me to a clinic, but I couldn't go through with it. I ran away instead."

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. The sheer cruelty of the web Eleanor had spun around them both became blindingly clear. He stood up abruptly, pacing toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"We are going to fix this," Daniel said, turning back to face them with a look of absolute resolve. "Starting tomorrow, we find the best family attorneys in the city. We secure Lily's future, and we cut Eleanor out of our lives permanently."

Before Ivy could process his ambitious plan, a sharp, rhythmic pounding echoed suddenly from the heavy front door.
