Chapter 2 - The Exit Strategy

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom seemed to close in slow motion behind Daniel, Ivy, and little Lily. The muffled murmurs of three hundred shocked guests dissolved into the quiet stone hallway of the luxury hotel. Daniel kept his arm firmly around Ivy’s shaking shoulders, guiding her away from the golden threshold where Eleanor and Richard stood paralyzed. Lily clutched Ivy’s wedding dress fabric in her small fists, her crying finally subsiding into nervous hiccups.
"Daniel, you shouldn't have done that," Ivy whispered, her voice trembling as a stray tear cut a clean path through her makeup. "Your family... your entire wedding day is ruined."
"My wedding day was built on a foundation of lies that I refuse to participate in for another second," Daniel replied, his tone hard granite. He stopped near a private elevator bank and pressed the call button with sharp determination. "For six years, I’ve wondered why you disappeared from my life right after college. For six years, I’ve carried that ghost. And now I find out I have a daughter because that monster couldn't keep her cruelty to herself."
"She didn't know you would figure it out so fast," Ivy murmured, looking down at Lily, who was peering up at Daniel with wide, fearful eyes that mirrored his own emerald green iris pattern.
Daniel knelt down slowly until he was eye-level with the little girl. He swallowed hard against the massive lump in his throat, terrified of scaring her further.
"Hey, Lily-bug," Daniel said softly, his voice cracking slightly despite his best efforts. "Do you know who I am?"
Lily shook her head slowly, her dark curls bouncing against her sparkly dress. "Mommy said you were a star in the sky."
Daniel closed his eyes for a second, feeling as though he had been struck in the chest with a heavy mallet. He looked up at Ivy, his gaze burning with a fierce, protective intensity that defied the chaos behind them.
"Well, mommy lied to you just a little bit," Daniel smiled gently, reaching out to brush a stray tear from the child's cheek. "I’m right here on earth. And I’m never going away."
Before Ivy could respond, the elevator doors slid open to reveal a solitary bellhop who stared awkwardly at the bridal party before quickly looking away. They stepped inside the mirrored cabin, the heavy doors sealing them off from the hotel corridor.

As the car began its descent toward the underground valet, the phone in Daniel’s tuxedo pocket began to buzz violently. He pulled it out, seeing Eleanor’s name flashing across the screen with an angry red warning icon. He stared at it for a moment, his thumb hovering over the screen. Then, with deliberate slowness, he powered the device completely off.
