Chapter 13 - The Cliffside Confrontation

The hiss of the metal-cutting torch grew deafening as white-hot sparks showered against the inside of the rusted iron door. Daniel shoved hard against the heavy shelving units, barricading the tunnel entrance as best as he could, while Julian pointed urgently toward the faint glimmer of daylight at the far end of the concrete pipe.
"Move! The torch will cut through the latch in under two minutes!" Julian shouted, urging Ivy and Lily forward through the cramped, damp tunnel.
Crawling on their hands and knees, Daniel stayed directly behind Ivy, keeping his body positioned as a shield against any falling debris. The salty ocean breeze grew stronger, tasting clean and sharp against their burning lungs. Finally, Lily scrambled out of the pipe opening first, tumbling onto the rocky ledge outside, followed closely by Ivy.
Daniel and Julian tumbled out into the open air just as a loud crash echoed from the tunnel behind them. The iron door had given way.
They stood on a jagged, wind-swept cliff overlooking the churning gray Atlantic Ocean. Towering pine trees framed the precipice, and far below, waves smashed violently against jagged boulders. There was nowhere else to run.
A moment later, Eleanor stepped out of the tunnel exit, her cream-colored Chanel suit stained with soot, her blonde hair slightly disheveled. In her right hand, she gripped a heavy black steel revolver with absolute steadiness.
"End of the line, family," Eleanor hissed, her eyes wide and manic as the ocean wind whipped her clothes around her. "You really thought you could strip me of everything? After all the sacrifices I made to keep this family at the top?"
"Put the gun down, Eleanor," Daniel said, stepping forward slowly, putting himself directly between the weapon and Ivy and Lily. "It’s over. You’re finished."
"I am never finished, Daniel!" Eleanor screamed, raising the barrel of the gun directly toward his chest. "If I can't have this empire, and if I can't control my legacy, then none of you will walk off this cliff alive!"
Julian stepped out from the shadows beside Daniel, looking at his sister with profound pity. "You’ve spent your entire life destroying everyone who loved you, Eleanor. Look at yourself. You’re completely alone."
"Shut up!" Eleanor shrieked, her finger tightening against the trigger.

Before she could fire, the sound of whirring rotor blades suddenly roared overhead. A massive black tactical helicopter dropped rapidly out of the gray coastal fog, its powerful spotlight blinding Eleanor instantly as it illuminated the cliffside in brilliant daylight.
