Chapter 5 - The Legal Storm

The morning sun cast a harsh, glaring light across the mahogany conference table of one of the city's most formidable family law firms. Daniel sat at the head of the table, his fingers steepened together as he stared at the dense stack of legal documents Richard had delivered the night before. Across from him sat Marcus Vance, a senior partner renowned for his ruthless defense of parental rights and corporate whistleblowers.

Ivy sat beside Daniel, holding a warm cup of black coffee while Lily played quietly with a tablet in the corner of the private office.

Marcus adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, his eyes scanning the forensic document analysis report with clinical detachment. "These bank records are damning," Marcus said, his voice deep and measured. "The wire transfers from Eleanor’s personal trust account directly to the handwriting forgery expert are traceable down to the penny. Combined with the clinic logs showing she coerced a pregnant nineteen-year-old under false pretenses, we have enough to file immediate criminal charges for fraud and coercion."

"I don't want to ruin her just to be vengeful," Ivy said softly, looking down at the table. "I just want her away from Lily. I want peace."

"Ivy, people like Eleanor Vance don't understand peace; they only understand power," Marcus replied firmly, sliding a new folder across the polished wood. "And right now, she is attempting to wield all of her power against you. Look at this."

Daniel pulled the document forward. His eyes scanned the legal notice, and the color drained from his face.

"An emergency ex parte custody filing," Daniel read aloud, his voice dropping an octave in sheer disbelief. "She’s claiming Ivy is an unfit, unstable mother and petitioning for immediate, permanent custody of Lily."

"On what grounds?" Ivy’s voice rose in panic, her hands shaking so badly the coffee cup rattled against its saucer.

"Fabricated character witness statements, claiming you abandoned the child multiple times, and leveraging her immense wealth to argue financial instability," Marcus explained, leaning forward. "Judges in emergency hearings often lean toward stability when a wealthy grandparent steps up with a fully funded home. She is weaponizing her bank account against your maternal bond."

Daniel slammed his palm flat against the table, the sharp sound echoing through the quiet office. "Not on my watch. I am on the birth certificate. I am a fit, established father with the financial and legal means to protect my child."

"That complicates her narrative, which is why she’s trying to invalidate your paternity recognition as well," Marcus warned, tapping a pen against the desk. "She’s claiming you were manipulated into claiming a child that isn't biologically yours."

Daniel let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "She knows damn well whose child that is. Lily has my mother’s exact eyes."

Before Marcus could answer, the heavy frosted glass door of the conference room burst open without warning.
