Chapter 10 - The Hidden Vault

Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket, his thumb swiping across the screen to check the urgent notification. A high-priority security alert from the private server at his family’s ancestral estate flashed red. Someone was attempting to access the legacy offline vault—a secure underground archive where his late grandfather had stored sensitive legal documents dating back decades.
"What is it, Daniel?" Ivy asked, noticing the sudden tightening of his jaw. "Is it Eleanor?"
"No," Daniel replied, frowning as he stared at the encrypted data stream on his screen. "It’s not Eleanor. The alarm was triggered from inside the estate network using my father’s master cryptographic key. A key that only three people on earth ever possessed: my father, Eleanor... and someone else."
"Who else?" Marcus asked, stepping back into the conference room with a fresh cup of coffee.
"My uncle, Julian," Daniel said, his voice dropping as a cold realization hit him. "He supposedly died in a boating accident twenty years ago, right before I left for college. Eleanor always said he drowned off the coast of Maine."
Marcus adjusted his glasses, stepping closer to read the data feed. "If Julian’s cryptographic key just pinged the master server, he isn't dead. He’s been hiding in the system, or someone else has his key."
Ivy stepped forward, holding Lily’s hand tightly. "If Eleanor lied about Julian dying, what else did she lie about? Could he be the reason she was so terrified of you digging into the family trust?"
Daniel looked at Marcus, the pieces of a much darker family mystery falling into place. "We need to go to the estate. Now."
The drive to the Vance family estate took forty-five tense minutes through the winding coastal roads of Maine. The sprawling gothic mansion loomed against the gray ocean backdrop, its dark stone towers shrouded in rolling fog. As Daniel’s car pulled through the iron security gates, the entire property looked deserted, save for a single black sedan parked near the side service entrance.
Daniel parked sharply, killing the engine. He turned to Ivy, his expression fierce. "Stay in the car with Lily. Lock the doors. If I’m not back out in twenty minutes, call Marcus and the authorities."
"I’m coming with you," Ivy said instantly, unbuckling her seatbelt. "We’re done running and hiding, Daniel. Whatever is inside that house involves our family, which means it involves me."
Daniel hesitated, looking into her stubborn, beautiful eyes. He knew arguing with her was useless. He nodded, turning to the backseat. "Stay close to Mommy, Lily-bug. We’ll be right back."
They slipped through the heavy oak side door of the mansion, entering the dim, dust-motes-filled hallway that led down to the subterranean archives. The air grew colder with every step they took down the stone staircase. At the end of the corridor, a heavy steel vault door stood wide open, casting a warm yellow glow across the stone floor.

As Daniel and Ivy crept closer to the open threshold, the sound of someone frantically shuffling through old paper files echoed from within the secret room.
