Chapter 9 - Blackout and Betrayal

The sudden explosion at the far end of the shipping harbor sent a massive shockwave rolling across the concrete tarmac, shattering the high-intensity floodlights in a shower of brilliant, blinding sparks. Pitch-black darkness instantly swallowed the area, broken only by the flickering amber glow of emergency fires burning near the distant container cranes.

Inside the medevac helicopter, pandemonium erupted. Elena shrieked in terror on the tarmac below, the sound of scrambling boots and shouting guards echoing wildly in the dark.

“Get down!” Attorney Vance yelled, shoving Clara and the baby back into the reinforced interior alcove of the cabin as a stray ricochet sparked off the helicopter's landing skid.

Clara held her newborn daughter fiercely against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her mind remained ice-cold. She looked past Vance toward the open doorway, where the beam of a single tactical flashlight cut through the smoke and fog.

“Victor!” Elena screamed from somewhere out in the darkness. “Where are you? Secure the perimeter!”

“I’m right here, you idiot,” Victor’s voice snapped back, sounding entirely too close to the helicopter's access ladder.

A heavy shadow vaulted into the cabin, the beam of a tactical flashlight sweeping blindingly across the interior. It wasn't one of the federal marshals or the corporate guards. It was Victor himself, holding a suppressed pistol in one hand and a portable override terminal in the other. He slammed the helicopter door shut with his boot, sealing them inside the dim, vibrating cabin.

“End of the line, brother,” Victor whispered, training the barrel of his weapon directly on Attorney Vance’s chest. “You really thought you could outsmart the family trust over a surrogate?”

Attorney Vance didn't flinch. He slowly raised his hands, keeping his body positioned squarely between Victor and Clara. “You’re pointing a gun at a federal officer of the court, Victor. The moment you pull that trigger, every offshore account the Sterlings own is permanently frozen by automated treasury default.”

Victor laughed softly, a chilling sound in the enclosed space. “Let them freeze. Once I secure the birth certificate and the biometric signature from that child, the entire corporate empire resets under my sole proprietorship. Dad is finished; Julian is a liability. It’s just me now.”

Clara shifted slowly behind Vance, her fingers sliding into the side pocket of her medical scrubs. Her fingers brushed against the cold, hard casing of the satellite locator beacon she had carried all morning.

“You won't get the signature, Victor,” Clara said quietly, stepping out from behind Vance’s shoulder with a terrifying, unflinching smile.

Victor sneered, turning the pistol toward her. “Try me.”

Before Victor could squeeze the trigger, the cabin’s emergency backup generator kicked in with a loud whine, and the small tablet in Clara’s hand suddenly chimed with a high-pitched, automated alert.
