Chapter 2 - The Echoes of the Past

The heavy footsteps echoing up the private hallway belonged to Marcus Sterling, the patriarch of the empire, whose mere presence usually commanded immediate silence. Julian pulled back instantly, his hand hovering inches from the marble counter as the color drained completely from his face. Elena dropped her defensive posture, her arms falling limply to her sides as she darted a terrified glance toward the entryway. Clara maintained her grip on the smartphone, the live video call still transmitting every drop of tension straight to the emergency legal trust waiting miles away.
Marcus stepped into the bright modern kitchen, leaning heavily on a polished mahogany cane. His sharp eyes swept across the room, instantly decoding the frozen postures, the harsh lighting, and the subtle sheen of sweat on Julian’s forehead.
“What in God’s name is happening in my house?” Marcus demanded, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
Julian forced a tight, nervous smile, stepping in front of the marble island to block Marcus’s view of Clara and the phone. “Nothing, Dad. Just a minor domestic disagreement. Clara is just hormonal and overwhelmed.”
Clara stepped to the side, refusing to be erased or minimized. She tilted the smartphone forward so the screen reflected directly in Marcus’s line of sight. “It wasn't a disagreement, Marcus. It was a confession of financial fraud and premeditated custody manipulation.”
Elena gasped, covering her mouth with a manicured hand. “Marcus, she’s lying! She’s trying to steal our assets!”
Marcus ignored Elena completely. His gaze locked onto the smartphone screen, where the green recording light of the live legal feed blinked mockingly back at him. His face hardened like cracked porcelain as he recognized the seal of the Federal District Court on the digital document open in the background of the call.
“Turn that off,” Marcus whispered, taking a slow, threatening step toward Clara.
Clara didn't blink. “If I turn this off, the injunction automatically files in three different jurisdictions. You’re finished, all of you.”

Julian lunged forward to grab the phone, but a sharp, agonizing contraction ripped through Clara’s body, causing her to drop to her knees with a choked cry. As she fell, the phone skidded across the pristine tile floor, stopping right at the polished leather shoes of Marcus Sterling, who slowly looked down at the glowing screen.
