Chapter 3 - The Digital Noose

The smartphone glowed against the dark leather of Marcus Sterling’s shoes, casting an eerie blue light upward onto his weathered, stern face. Julian froze in mid-stride, his hands outstretched toward the floor as if trying to snatch back a bullet he had already fired. Elena stood paralyzed by the kitchen door, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as she watched the patriarch of the family stare down at the digital evidence of their undoing.

Clara groaned softly, clutching her heavily pregnant belly as she fought through the blinding wave of pain on the cold tile. The contractions were coming faster now, chaining together with terrifying speed, but her mind remained razor-sharp. She watched Marcus slowly bend his knees with a wince of arthritis, his trembling fingers reaching down to retrieve the device.

“Don’t touch it, Marcus,” a calm, synthesized voice echoed from the phone’s tiny speaker. It was Attorney Vance, the senior partner heading the whistleblower protection trust, speaking directly from the live feed. “The chain of custody is already secured. Every word spoken in this kitchen for the last twenty minutes has been logged, encrypted, and mirrored to federal servers.”

Marcus froze, his hand hovering an inch above the glass screen. He slowly straightened up, his eyes darting toward Julian with a look of pure, unadulterated disappointment.

“You absolute fool,” Marcus muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. “You left an audio trail a mile wide.”

Julian’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. “I didn't know she had the encrypted burner phone! She played us from the very beginning!”

“Played you?” Clara gasped from the floor, pushing herself up against the marble island with a trembling arm. Her voice dripped with bitter irony. “I documented every single threat, every offshore transfer, and every attempt to legally erase my unborn child since the day I signed your employment contract as a medical surrogate. You thought you could treat a human being like disposable inventory.”

Elena stepped forward, her face twisted in desperation. “Marcus, listen to me! She’s an unstable surrogate! We can spin this, we can claim she’s suffering from delusions!”

Marcus ignored them both, his eyes fixed on Clara as he slowly pressed the speaker button on the phone. “How much do they want?”

Before Attorney Vance could answer from the live feed, the heavy oak front door downstairs was suddenly kicked wide open with a deafening crash, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of multiple combat boots rushing up the stairs.
