Chapter 7 - Birth in the Mist

The dense coastal fog pressed hard against the reinforced glass portholes of the plunging helicopter, wrapping the cabin in an isolated, suffocating cocoon. Inside, the red emergency lights pulsed rhythmically, painting the sterile medical equipment in stark, bloody strokes. Clara gripped the metal side rails of the gurney so hard her knuckles turned translucent, a guttural cry tearing from her throat as a blinding contraction forced her body into an unyielding arch.

“Breathe, Clara, just breathe!” the paramedic yelled over the whistling shriek of the wind outside and the heavy thrum of the rotor blades fighting the turbulence. “The baby’s head is crowning! You have to push now!”

Attorney Vance stood pressed against the opposite bulkhead, holding the secure satellite tablet in one hand while using his other hand to manually shield Clara from the sway of the cabin. His eyes darted nervously between the medical procedure and the navigation screen, where the red blip of the Sterling corporate jet continued to circle blindly above the fog bank.

“We’re completely off radar,” Vance shouted to the pilot through the cockpit door. “Can they find us in this soup?”

“Not visually, but our analog transponder is leaking a faint signature!” the pilot yelled back, his hands flying across the control panel. “If she doesn’t deliver in the next sixty seconds, we’re going to have to set down blindly in an unmapped zone!”

Clara didn't hear them. Her entire universe narrowed down to the agonizing, miraculous fire burning through her core. With a final, soul-deep exertion of strength that drained every drop of adrenaline from her veins, she pushed with everything she had left.

A sharp, piercing baby’s cry cut cleanly through the roar of the engines.

The paramedic scooped the newborn tiny and slippery from the linens, expertly clearing the infant’s airway before wrapping the baby in a sterile thermal blanket. A profound, overwhelming wave of silence seemed to settle over the cabin, heavier than the fog outside.

“It’s a girl,” the paramedic whispered, a profound sense of relief washing over his tense features as he carefully placed the crying infant directly onto Clara’s trembling chest.

Clara looked down at the tiny, perfect face nestled against her collarbone, hot tears streaming freely down her flushed cheeks. She pressed her hand gently against the baby’s back, whispering fiercely into the soft hair. “I’ve got you. You’re safe. Nobody will ever touch you.”

Suddenly, the helicopter’s emergency radio burst to life with a loud, piercing screech, followed by an automated, metallic voice echoing through the cabin. “Target vector re-acquired. Corporate enforcement units have surrounded landing zone delta. Surrender custody immediately.”
