Chapter 8 - The Landing Zone Trap

The medevac helicopter touched down with a hard, jarring thud that sent a metallic shudder through the landing skids. The dense coastal fog slowly began to part, revealing the harsh, industrial glare of floodlights surrounding an isolated, concrete tarmac nestled deep inside the Sterling family’s private shipping harbor.

Inside the cabin, Clara clutched her newborn daughter tightly against her chest, the thermal blanket pulled up to shield the infant’s face from the biting wind. The paramedic stood by the sliding door, his hand resting on his sidearm, while Attorney Vance frantically tapped commands into his secure legal tablet.

“They tricked us,” Vance cursed, his face pale under the harsh red interior lights. “The fog wasn't natural—it was generated by their private maritime atmospheric scrubbers. They herded us right into their primary jurisdiction.”

The heavy side door of the helicopter slid open with a sharp mechanical hiss, and the biting sea breeze rushed in, carrying the sound of dozens of heavy footsteps surrounding the aircraft. Floodlights instantly blinded the cabin, casting long, stark shadows across the medical equipment.

“Federal and corporate joint task force! Step out of the aircraft with your hands visible!” a harsh voice echoed through a megaphone from the tarmac below.

Clara looked toward the open door, her eyes adjusting to the blinding glare. Standing at the forefront of the armed guards was Elena Sterling, draped in a heavy wool coat, her short dark hair blowing wildly in the wind. Standing beside her was a tall, imposing man in an immaculate bespoke suit—Victor Vance, the ruthless head of Sterling Global’s legal enforcement division, who happened to be Attorney Vance’s estranged older brother.

“Well, well, well,” Victor called out, stepping up onto the lower rung of the helicopter ladder with a cold, predatory smile. “It appears the family estate has a few minor boundary leaks to patch up.”

Attorney Vance stepped forward, blocking the threshold of the door. “Back off, Victor. This aircraft is operating under direct federal magistrate authority. You have no jurisdiction here.”

Victor chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. “Jurisdiction? Little brother, the maritime code of this harbor supersedes federal airspace guidelines within three miles of the coastline. And more importantly—the surrogate signed an exclusive prenatal assignment waiver containing a binding arbitration clause.”

Clara stepped past Attorney Vance, her bare feet touching the cold metal floor of the doorway. Despite her exhaustion, her posture was ramrod straight, her eyes locked onto Victor with an unnerving, icy calm.

“I revoked that waiver twelve hours ago,” Clara said, her voice cutting clearly through the howling wind. She lifted the newborn baby slightly into the light. “And the child was born in federal airspace.”

Victor’s smile vanished instantly, his eyes darting to the infant before shifting to a terrifying, dark realization. Before he could speak, a massive explosion rocked the far end of the harbor, plunging the entire shipping yard into sudden, pitch-black darkness.
