Chapter 5 - The Rooftop Escape

The rotor blades of the federal medevac helicopter churned the morning air into a deafening roar as they touched down on the private helipad atop the Sterling estate. Wind whipped wildly through Clara’s reddish-brown hair, plastered against her damp forehead as two heavily armored paramedics lifted her onto a specialized trauma gurney. She clutched the satellite locator beacon in her right hand like a lifeline, her knuckles stark white against the dark plastic casing.

Attorney Vance walked beside the gurney, shouting over the roar of the engines to ensure her IV line remained secure. “We’ve got you, Clara! Just breathe! The airspace is completely locked down by federal order—none of their private jets can leave the tarmac.”

Below them, on the ground floor, Marcus, Julian, and Elena were being escorted out of the front entrance in handcuffs, flashbulbs from opportunistic local reporters cutting through the gloom like lightning strikes. Julian was screaming obscenities, thrashing against the federal marshals as the gravity of their corporate collapse finally set in.

Inside the sterile, white-lit cabin of the chopper, Clara closed her eyes as another agonizing contraction tore through her body. The lead paramedic checked her vitals, his expression turning grave as he pressed a comms headset to his ear. “We’re losing time! Transition to active delivery protocol immediately, we won't make it to the regional medical center!”

Clara grabbed the paramedic's sleeve, her grip unnaturally strong despite her exhaustion. “No... not yet. Is the legal vault sealed?”

“It’s sealed, locked, and backed up to three independent federal nodes,” Vance assured her, leaning over the gurney and holding up a secure tablet displaying the live asset-transfer confirmation. “The moment this child draws a breath, the Sterling family trust is legally dissolved, and all assets revert directly to the child’s independent trust, with you as sole legal guardian.”

Clara let out a ragged, triumphant breath, a fierce smile cutting through her pain. “Let them try to sue me now.”

The chopper lifted off the pad, tilting sharply as it banked away from the estate toward the skyline. Through the reinforced glass window, Clara watched the sprawling Sterling mansion shrink into a meaningless speck against the sprawling grey metropolis.

Suddenly, the pilot’s urgent voice crackled over the intercom, cutting through the steady hum of the engines. “Command center, we have an unlisted aircraft intercepting our vector—and they’re broadcasting an emergency override code!”
