Chapter 15 - The Final Echo

The sapphire glow of the satellite tablet slowly faded into a soft, resting grey as the planetary sequestration protocol completed its final cycle. The deafening roar of the orbital transport dissolved into a distant, fading hum high above the coastal fog, leaving the shipping harbor wrapped in a profound, eerie silence.
Attorney Vance leaned against the bulkhead of the medevac helicopter, wiping a smear of soot from his cheek as he watched the federal agents escort Dr. Evelyn Vance toward an awaiting transport van. The Sterling dynasty—Marcus, Julian, Victor, and now Evelyn—was entirely dismantled, their multi-billion-dollar empire reduced to a pile of federal ash and encrypted audit logs.
Clara sat on the gurney, holding her newborn daughter securely against her chest. The infant was sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the global war that had been fought over her cradle. Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the last vestiges of adrenaline drain from her exhausted muscles.
“It’s over,” Vance said softly, offering a weary, reassuring smile. “The trust is dissolved, your guardianship is federally sealed, and you have complete immunity. You’re free, Clara.”
Clara nodded slowly, a profound sense of peace finally settling over her features. “Thank you, Vance. For everything.”
She reached down into the pocket of her light blue medical scrubs to pull out the burner phone she had used to start the entire confrontation in the Sterling kitchen hours ago. She intended to toss the device into the biohazard bin and leave the past behind forever.
As her fingers brushed against the cold plastic casing, the phone screen suddenly lit up with a harsh, unlisted text notification.
Clara paused, her thumb hovering over the screen. She pulled the device out and looked down at the glowing display. There was no sender ID, no corporate logo, and no encrypted hash. Just a single, perfectly formatted sentence typed in plain text:
“You forgot to check the nursery.”
May you like
Clara’s heart stopped. She stared at the screen in absolute horror as a sudden, sharp coldness gripped her spine. She slowly looked up at Attorney Vance, whose smile instantly vanished, his eyes widening in sudden, paralyzing realization as he understood the terrifying implication of the message.
The helicopter door slid shut behind them with a heavy, final click, plunging the cabin into absolute darkness.
