Chapter 12 - The Genetic Override

The deafening roar of compressed air tearing through the security gates echoed across the harbor as the heavily armed, unmarked operatives flooded the tarmac. Their tactical gear bore no corporate logos, only a stark, silver helix symbol stamped on their shoulders.

“Get down! Secure the aircraft!” Vance shouted, lunging forward to manually slam and lock the heavy sliding door of the medevac helicopter.

Before he could throw the locking bolt, the barrel of a specialized breaching weapon smashed through the glass porthole, shattering it into a spiderweb of cracks. A heavy cloud of dense, sweet-smelling gas hissed into the cabin, instantly filling the confined space with a thick, soporific haze.

Clara coughed violently, shielding her newborn daughter against her chest with the thermal blanket. She pressed her face hard into the fabric, trying to filter the air, but her limbs rapidly grew heavy and numb. The sheer terror of helplessness paralyzed her muscles.

“Vance... the baby...” Clara gasped, her vision blurring at the edges as the room spun violently out of focus.

Attorney Vance stumbled against the bulkhead, his knees buckling beneath him as he reached blindly for his encrypted tablet. “Evelyn... you insane... bitch...” he muttered before collapsing hard against the metal floor.

Outside the fractured porthole, Dr. Evelyn Vance walked calmly through the haze of smoke and gas, her white lab coat spotless against the dark concrete. She stopped directly beneath the open doorway of the helicopter, looking up into the dim interior with cold, clinical detachment.

With a smooth, practiced motion, Evelyn pulled a heavy brass override key from her coat pocket and inserted it into the manual emergency latch on the outside of the aircraft door. With a sharp click, the heavy door swung wide open, letting the biting wind and swirling fog rush back into the cabin.

Clara fought desperately against the creeping darkness, dragging herself backward across the floor until her spine hit the rear bulkhead. She held her baby tighter, tears of sheer rage and exhaustion mixing with the chemical residue on her cheeks.

“You can’t have her,” Clara whispered, her voice a hoarse, ragged hiss. “She’s a human being, not a patent.”

Evelyn stepped up into the cabin, her heels clicking softly against the metal flooring. She looked down at Clara not with malice, but with the terrifying indifference of a scientist inspecting a laboratory specimen.

“My dear Clara, you fundamentally misunderstand the nature of creation,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth and chillingly calm. “You weren't hired as a surrogate. You were selected as the final, genetically optimized host for the ultimate synthesis of the Sterling estate.”

Evelyn reached out her gloved hand toward the baby.

Clara let out a primal scream of defiance, using her last remaining ounce of strength to lunge forward—only for a red laser dot to suddenly appear squarely center on her forehead, cast from a sniper rifle somewhere in the fog outside.
