Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Fracture

The morning sun beat down mercilessly through the oversized windows of the Sterling family kitchen, casting harsh geometric shadows across the pristine white marble island. Julian Sterling stood by the edge of the counter, his knuckles white as he leaned forward into the space. His posture was rigid, radiating a cold, suppressed fury that seemed to lower the temperature in the bright, modern room. Across from him, Elena Sterling stood near the doorway, her arms crossed defensively over her crisp white collared blouse, her short dark hair framing a face carved from stone. Near the stainless-steel stove, Clara—thirty-five, heavily pregnant, and wearing light blue medical scrubs—let out a sharp, ragged breath as a fresh wave of pain wracked her body. She pressed a hand against the small of her back, her face twisting in a silent plea for a moment of peace.

Julian refused to grant it. His voice cut through the heavy silence like a shard of broken glass, shaking the tense air.

“You don't disrespect this family,” Julian snapped, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he stared directly at Clara.

Clara grimaced, a fresh contraction tearing through her abdomen. She stumbled slightly, her vision blurring at the edges, but survival instinct kept her moving. With a trembling hand, she reached out and blindly grabbed a heavy black-handled cast-iron skillet resting near the burner.

“Don't touch me,” Clara warned through gritted teeth, her voice a low, gravelly hiss.

Without breaking her gaze, Clara spun around with surprising agility given her condition. In her other hand, she whipped out a smartphone, holding the glowing screen directly into Julian’s face. The device displayed a live video call, the camera feeding a crystal-clear image of a dimly lit office miles away, where a legal team was recording every single second of the confrontation.

Julian froze. Color drained from his face as he stared in shock and escalating anger at the screen. Elena stepped forward, her eyes widening in sudden horror as she recognized the initials of the senior partner visible in the video feed corner.

“Once she delivers she won't control anything!” Julian roared, losing whatever shred of composure he had left, lunging forward toward the phone.

Clara didn't flinch. She pulled the phone back an inch, her eyes locking onto the live camera lens with a terrifying, unnerving calm.

“I heard everything,” Clara whispered softly into the microphone.

Before Julian could lunge across the marble island to snatch the phone from her grip, the front door downstairs clicked open, and a heavy set of footsteps began echoing up the private hallway.
