Chapter 9 - The Ambush at the Gates

The digital screen on Elena’s tablet flickered, casting a harsh blue light across her tense features. The live feed from the perimeter cameras showed the heavy federal transport van parked awkwardly across the winding gravel driveway, its hazard lights blinking rhythmically against the relentless rain. Two figures in black tactical gear stood near the driver’s side door, but their stance was rigid, unnatural, and entirely devoid of standard law enforcement protocol.
"That's not a rescue," Julian said instantly, his calculating mind recalibrating at terrifying speed. He dropped the dossier into Claire's hands and unbuttoned his suit jacket to reveal a concealed tactical holster beneath his black shirt. "That's a cleanup crew."
Arthur Sterling stopped laughing. The manic triumph on his face evaporated into sheer, unadulterated terror as he realized his own safety net had just been weaponized against him.
"They weren't supposed to be here tonight," Arthur stammered, his voice cracking as he looked toward the open doors. "The board... the board promised they would handle the transition quietly if I took the fall!"
"You were a loose end, Arthur," Elena stated coldly, tapping her tablet to isolate the audio feed from the gates.
A burst of static crackled from the tablet speakers, followed by a calm, modulated voice that sent a chill through the entire foyer.
“Subject Sterling is compromised. Secure the primary ledger from the girl and sanitize the premises. Leave no corporate linkages to the Vance account.”
Julian turned sharply toward the three favored daughters, who were now sobbing uncontrollably on the marble steps. "Get away from the windows! Now!"
Too late. A deafening roar shattered the front glass doors, showering the foyer in a cascade of glittering shards. Heavy rifle fire chewed through the limestone pillars, sending marble chips flying in all directions. The bodyguards in the background scrambled for cover, drawing their weapons and returning fire toward the dark perimeter.
Claire hit the floor, instinctively pulling the leather dossier and the ledger against her chest. Julian dropped beside her, shielding her body with his own as bullets ricocheted off the grand staircase with terrifying frequency.
"You brought me into this crossfire," Claire shouted over the din of gunfire, her green eyes flashing with anger and adrenaline.
"I brought you out of a prison," Julian replied calmly, reloading his weapon with practiced efficiency without breaking eye contact with her. "Now help me survive it."
Elena crawled toward them from the doorway, her trench coat torn at the shoulder, holding a encrypted satellite phone. "Julian, the perimeter is completely locked down. We're cut off. And the attackers... they aren't corporate mercenaries. They're carrying Department of Defense serial-numbered ordnance."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he heard heavy boots marching through the shattered glass of the front entrance.
"They aren't here for Arthur," Julian whispered, realizing the horrifying truth too late. "They're here to eliminate the last living heir who knows where the offshore accounts are hidden."

He grabbed Claire by the arm, dragging her toward a hidden service panel disguised behind the wainscoting of the grand staircase.
