Chapter 1 - The Calculus of Deception

The grand crystal chandelier overhead cast a cold, fractured brilliance across the polished white marble of the mansion foyer. Julian Vance stood stiffly in his tailored black suit and black shirt, his dark, styled hair catching the sharp glare of the lights. His intense eyes scanned the assembly with a chilling, predatory precision. Opposite him stood Arthur Sterling, a man of fifty-five with graying hair, a trimmed beard, and a predatory smirk of his own. Flanking Arthur were three young women standing in an unnaturally rigid row, dressed in white, black, and gold.
Julian’s gaze swept from the trio back to Arthur. The silence in the cavernous hall felt heavy, suffocating, and loaded with unspoken threats.
"Which one is your daughter?" Julian asked, his voice low, sharp, and laced with immediate suspicion. "All three?"
Arthur chuckled, a dry, dismissive sound that echoed off the high ceilings. He gestured casually toward the women, who merely offered polite, rehearsed smiles.
Julian’s eyes narrowed further, frustration flickering across his clean-shaven face. He stepped closer, the heels of his shoes clicking sharply against the marble floor.
"You said you had three daughters, didn't you?" Julian pressed, his tone dropping into a dangerous register.
Arthur didn't flinch. Instead, he smoothly turned his hand toward the periphery of the foyer, where a solitary figure stood shivering near the base of the massive staircase. It was Claire, a twenty-eight-year-old woman with long, vibrant red hair cascading over a simple green long-sleeve dress. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face wet with restrained tears of absolute despair.
"Ah, Claire," Arthur said dismissively, as if introducing a piece of damaged furniture. "She's the child from my first wife. She just stays around to help with housework."
Julian stared at the red-haired woman. The calculating, harsh smile that slowly crept across his face was more terrifying than any outburst of rage.
"Housework?" Julian whispered, his gaze locking onto Claire's trembling hands.

Suddenly, Claire raised her head, her green eyes flashing with a sudden, icy defiance that completely shattered her broken facade.
