Chapter 5 - Fire and Confessions

The burning flare struck the antique silk rug with a hiss, instantly catching the dry, century-old fabric. Thick, acrid smoke billowed upward, curling around the crystal chandelier and obscuring the terrified faces of the three favored daughters. Julian shoved Claire behind him, kicking the blazing rug away from them with a swift, calculated motion.

"Elena, get the exit doors open!" Julian commanded, coughing slightly from the smoke.

Elena was already at the massive front doors, throwing the heavy brass deadbolts with a series of heavy metallic clicks. The cool night air rushed inward, pushing the smoke back and illuminating the stark reality of the Sterling household. Arthur was gone from the second-floor balcony, presumably fleeing toward the rooftop helipad.

Claire clutched the leather ledger to her chest, her long red hair tangled around her face. She looked at Julian, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce gratitude.

"You didn't have to save the book," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly as she coughed. "You could have just walked out the door and let my family burn in their own corruption."

Julian turned to her, his sharp, intense expression softening just a fraction—a micro-expression of genuine humanity that contrasted sharply with his usual cold demeanor.

"I don't walk away from investments, Claire," Julian said softly, though the warmth in his eyes betrayed his words. "And right now, you are the only real asset in this entire mansion."

The daughter in the white V-neck dress stumbled toward them, tears streaming down her carefully made-up face. "Please, take me with you! Father is insane! He locked us in the east wing for weeks just to force us into these meetings!"

Julian looked at her with utter indifference. "You had every opportunity to speak up when your father treated Claire like a slave. Loyalty bought with silence is worthless."

Elena swung the front doors wide open, revealing the flashing red and blue lights of multiple police cruisers pulling up the long, winding gravel driveway.

Claire looked down at the ledger, then up at Julian, realizing her life had changed forever. But as the first police officer stepped into the foyer, Claire noticed something terrifying slipped inside the back pocket of Julian's suit.
