Chapter 12 - The Enemy Within

The metallic tang of fresh blood filled the damp air of the wine cellar as Julian pressed his hand hard against his wounded shoulder. The fabric of his black shirt was rapidly darkening with crimson, but his intense eyes remained fixed on the retreating shadow of the tactical assassin who had just vanished back into the smoky catacombs.

Claire knelt beside him, tearing a strip of fabric from the hem of her green dress to wrap tightly around his bleeding shoulder. Her hands were surprisingly steady, despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins.

"That insignia," Claire said quietly, her green eyes reflecting a cold, devastating realization. "That wasn't just a government mercenary. That was your own company's security detail, Julian."

Julian winced slightly as she pulled the makeshift bandage tight, but his gaze never wavered. "Not my security detail. The board's security detail. They have been siphoning Vance Global's assets through Arthur's shell companies for six years. They used me to execute the hostile takeover tonight so I would take the fall for the RICO violations when the federal task force moved in."

Elena jogged back from the open storm doors, holding her encrypted tablet with a look of utter horror on her face. "Julian, you're right. I just accessed the internal mainframe logs. The override codes didn't come from Arthur's office upstairs. They came from the executive suite at Vance Global headquarters downtown—authorized by our own Chief Operating Officer, Marcus Vance."

Julian stood up slowly, leaning heavily against a shattered oak wine cask. The pain in his shoulder was sharp, but it was eclipsed by a cold, calculated fury that radiated from his entire posture.

"Marcus," Julian whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "Our own cousin."

Claire stood up beside him, brushing the dust from her green dress. She looked at the leather ledger in her hands, then up at Julian with a new level of understanding. She wasn't just a pawn in their corporate war anymore; she held the single piece of evidence that could bring down both corrupt empires at once.

"So your own family tried to assassinate you tonight," Claire said, her voice steady and sharp. "And my family spent my entire life trying to erase me. It seems we both have terrible taste in relatives."

A rare, genuine, self-deprecating smile touched the corner of Julian's mouth, softening his harsh expression entirely. "It appears we do, Claire."

"We can't go to the federal authorities," Elena warned urgently, tapping the screen of her tablet. "If Marcus has compromised the corporate mainframe, he has likely compromised the local field office as well. Anyone we contact outside this estate could be on his payroll."

Julian looked toward the open iron storm doors leading into the dark drainage tunnels beneath the city. The rain was still pouring outside, washing away the evidence in the streets.

"Then we don't go to the authorities," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, resolute register. "We go directly to the boardroom at Vance Global. Tonight."

Claire looked down at the ledger clutched in her hands, then met Julian's intense gaze without a trace of fear. "Let's go crash a board meeting."
