Chapter 14 - The Lion's Den

The blinding high-beam headlights of the armored SUVs cast long, distorted shadows across the vast concrete expanse of the Vance Global underground parking garage. Marcus Vance stood casually beside the lead vehicle, dressed in an immaculate gray suit that contrasted sharply with Julian’s soot-stained black suit and Claire’s mud-spattered green dress. Marcus held a sleek digital tablet in one hand, his expression a mask of arrogant superiority.
"Drop the ledger, Claire," Marcus called out smoothly, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars. "You've carried your dead mother's secrets far enough. It's time to let the professionals handle the cleanup."
Julian stepped slightly in front of Claire, using his own body to shield her despite his bleeding shoulder. His dark, intense eyes locked onto his cousin with a chilling, predatory focus.
"You're out of your depth, Marcus," Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the garage. "The federal task force already has the primary hard copies of the RICO indictments. Killing us in your own parking garage won't stop the investigation; it will only guarantee you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security penitentiary."
Marcus chuckled, a dry, dismissive sound. He tapped the screen of his tablet, and instantly, a dozen red laser sights flickered to life across the dark corners of the upper parking levels, training their crosshairs directly on Julian, Claire, and Elena.
"The federal task force isn't moving in until dawn, Julian," Marcus replied, his smile turning razor-sharp. "And by dawn, this entire parking level—along with every piece of financial evidence linking Vance Global to Arthur Sterling's shell companies—will be consumed by a class-four structural fire. Accidents happen every day in old buildings."
Elena gripped her sidearm, her knuckles turning white. "He's bluffing about the fire. The sprinkler system is tied to the municipal grid."
"I disabled the municipal grid ten minutes ago, Aunt Elena," Marcus interrupted, his tone turning ice-cold. He raised his hand, signaling the rooftop snipers to take aim. "End them."
Before the trigger fingers could tighten, Claire stepped out from behind Julian. Her green dress was torn and stained, but her green eyes burned with an absolute, terrifying clarity that stopped Marcus dead in his tracks.
"You think the ledger in my hands is the only copy, Marcus?" Claire asked, her voice ringing clear and steady through the garage.
Marcus hesitated, lowering his hand slightly. "What are you talking about?"
Claire reached into the leather-bound book and pulled out a small, encrypted micro-chip, holding it up between her fingers for the overhead cameras to record.
"The moment we entered this garage, my encrypted cloud backup automatically broadcast every transaction, every offshore account, and every murder order directly to every major news outlet and federal prosecutor in the country," Claire stated coldly. "If we don't walk out of here alive in sixty seconds, your entire empire goes public."
Marcus’s face drained of all color, the arrogant smirk vanishing into pure, unadulterated panic.

Before Marcus could scream an order to fire, the heavy freight elevator doors behind him violently dinged, and the bright white lights of the elevator car illuminated the entire garage to reveal a dozen federal agents with drawn badges and tactical gear pouring out.
