Chapter 6 - The Badge in the Pocket

The flashing red and blue lights painted the white marble foyer in an erratic, pulsing rhythm. Police officers in heavy tactical gear poured through the open doors, led by a stern-faced detective who immediately scanned the room. Arthur Sterling, realizing his escape route via the rooftop was blocked by Vance Global security drones, came walking slowly down the grand staircase with his hands raised, wearing a mask of fabricated calm.

"Officers, thank goodness," Arthur called out, his voice smooth and rehearsed. "This man—Julian Vance—forced his way into my home, assaulted my staff, and attempted to extort me using falsified documents."

The detective stopped midway across the room, resting a hand on his holster as he looked at Julian.

Julian didn't flinch. He stood completely still, his hands resting casually at his sides, maintaining his sharp, intense expression. Elena stepped forward, pulling a metallic silver badge from her trench coat and flashing it directly in the detective's face.

"Federal Task Force on Corporate Extortion and Human Trafficking," Elena announced clearly. "We have an active warrant for Arthur Sterling under RICO statutes, signed three hours ago."

Arthur’s fabricated calm shattered instantly. His jaw slackened, and his eyes darted frantically toward the three favored daughters, who were now backing away from him as if he were a plague victim.

Claire watched the scene unfold from the safety of Julian's shadow. Her hand brushed against Julian's black suit jacket as she shifted her weight. Her fingers grazed the heavy outline of an object tucked into his inner breast pocket—an object she recognized instantly by its distinct leather embossing. It wasn't the ledger she had been holding. It was a private dossier bearing her own full legal name, dated five years prior, long before Julian and her paths had ever supposedly crossed.

Claire froze. She pulled her hand back as if burned.

"You knew who I was before you walked through those doors tonight, didn't you?" Claire whispered, her voice laced with sudden betrayal.

Julian turned his head slightly, his dark eyes meeting hers with a chilling, unapologetic intensity.

"I never enter a room by accident, Claire," Julian murmured quietly.

Before Claire could demand an explanation, Arthur let out a guttural laugh, pointing a shaking finger directly at Julian.

"Tell her the rest of it, Julian!" Arthur screamed hysterically as the cuffs were slapped onto his wrists. "Tell her who really bought the mortgage on her mother's hospital bed!"
