Chapter 10 - The Secret Corridor

The heavy oak wainscoting swung inward with a heavy, oiled click, revealing a narrow, dust-filled passage descending into the darkness beneath the mansion. The sound of tactical boots echoed loudly across the marble foyer as the unknown gunmen advanced, shouting clear, military-style clearance commands.
"Through here," Julian ordered, pushing Elena into the dark tunnel first before pulling Claire in behind him.
Claire resisted for a fraction of a second, clutching the leather ledger like a lifeline. "What about my sisters? We can't just leave them out there!"
"They are Arthur's blood, and they have the corporate protection codes to buy their own way out," Julian replied sharply, his voice devoid of hesitation. "You are the only target these men care about."
He slammed the wood panel shut just as a burst of automatic gunfire pulverized the wall inches from his head. The secret passage plunged them into absolute blackness, save for the narrow beam of Elena’s tactical flashlight cutting through the floating dust particles.
"Keep moving," Elena whispered urgently from ahead. "This tunnel leads directly to the old wine cellars beneath the greenhouse. From there, we can access the drainage tunnels leading to the river."
Claire stumbled over an uneven stone step, her green dress catching on a protruding iron bolt. Julian caught her by the waist before she could fall, pulling her flush against his chest. For a fleeting second amid the chaos, the intense, dangerous aura around him softened, replaced by a raw, protective instinct that felt entirely genuine.
"Can you walk?" Julian asked, his voice dropping an octave.
"I'm fine," Claire breathed, though her breathing was shallow and ragged. She looked up at him in the dim flashlight beam. "Why are you risking your entire empire for me, Julian? Don't tell me it's just about the corporate merger."
Julian held her gaze in the cramped, suffocating dark. He didn't answer immediately. He reached out and gently brushed a stray strand of vibrant red hair away from her damp forehead.
"Five years ago, when I bought your mother's debt," Julian said quietly, his voice barely audible over the distant sound of muffled explosions upstairs, "I read her final medical notes. She didn't write a will, Claire. She wrote a confession about the night your father stole Vance Global's foundational patents—and she named you as the sole legal custodian of the proof."
Claire’s breath hitched. The pieces of the puzzle violently snapped together in her mind. Her entire life of servitude, the abuse, the isolation—it wasn't just cruelty. It was a calculated, decades-long psychological imprisonment designed to keep her from ever remembering what her mother had hidden in her childhood bedroom.
"And my mother..." Claire whispered, her voice breaking. "Is she really...?"

Before Julian could answer, the heavy stone wall behind them exploded inward in a shower of concrete dust and white-hot shrapnel.
