Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

The heavy metal cuffs clicked shut around Arthur Sterling’s wrists, ending his reign of corporate tyranny with a dull, unromantic mechanical sound. The three favored daughters stood paralyzed near the base of the staircase, completely abandoned by the patriarch who had once treated them as prized commodities. But Claire barely heard the commotion of the arrests. Her mind was entirely consumed by Arthur’s parting accusation.
She stared up at Julian, her green eyes burning with a mixture of pain and fierce demand for the truth.
"What did he mean?" Claire asked, her voice dangerously quiet. "What did you buy, Julian?"
Julian did not look away, nor did he offer a comforting platitude. His face remained a mask of restrained emotion, his breathing measured and calm. He reached into his inner breast pocket—the exact spot Claire had touched moments earlier—and withdrew the leather-bound dossier she had felt in the dark. He held it out toward her, offering neither apology nor defense.
"Five years ago, your mother’s medical debt was quietly bought out by a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands," Julian said evenly, his voice smooth and steady. "That corporation was a wholly owned subsidiary of Vance Global. I didn't orchestrate her illness, Claire. But I bought the debt the day Arthur refused to pay for her final surgery."
Elena walked over, standing just behind her brother to lend silent support. "We tried to intervene legally back then, Claire. But Arthur had locked down your mother's estate with forged signatures. The only way to legally dismantle his network was from the inside out—by waiting for him to make a desperate play for external capital. That capital was my brother's company."
Claire stepped back, the truth washing over her like freezing water. "You used me as bait."
"We used his greed against him," Julian corrected, his tone sharpening slightly. "You were never bait, Claire. You were the only person in this family with the integrity to survive what he was doing."
Claire looked at the dossier in his hand, then down at her bruised wrists. She realized she had merely traded one cage for another, wrapped in silk and tailored suits instead of verbal abuse and forced housework.
"And what happens to me now?" Claire asked, her voice cracking for the first time. "Now that your investment has paid off?"
Julian opened the dossier, revealing a single document inside that made his intense expression flicker with a sudden, genuine shock.
May you like
"That," Julian whispered, pointing to the page, "is impossible."
