Chapter 2 - The Red-Haired Ghost

The single word hung in the chilled air of the foyer, heavy with a menace that made even Arthur’s bodyguards shift uneasily in the background. Julian Vance did not look away from Claire. Beneath her tear-stained cheeks and the modest green dress, he sensed a fierce, unbroken core that the Sterling family had clearly spent years trying to crush. Arthur coughed lightly, attempting to steer Julian’s attention back to the three favored daughters standing in their pristine white, black, and gold gowns.

"She is of no consequence, Julian," Arthur said smoothly, stepping physically between Julian and Claire. "The marriage contract stipulates one of my true daughters. Choose whichever aesthetic pleases you. The white dress represents purity, the black represents obedience, and the gold represents wealth. They have all been thoroughly prepared for your corporate union."

Julian ignored him entirely. He took three deliberate steps past Arthur, closing the distance between himself and Claire. The three favored daughters watched with a mixture of disdain and quiet panic, realizing their carefully curated spotlight was slipping away. Julian stopped inches from Claire, noting the raw bruises half-hidden beneath the sleeves of her green dress and the ledger clutched tightly against her chest.

"What's in the book, Claire?" Julian asked quietly, his voice pitched so only she could hear.

Claire’s breath hitched. For a second, the entire room seemed to hold its collective breath. She looked down at the leather-bound ledger, then slowly lifted her gaze to meet Julian's intense, calculating stare.

"It contains every transaction that built this empire," Claire whispered, her voice no longer trembling, but steady and sharp as glass. "Including the ones that put my mother in her grave."

Arthur lunged forward, his face draining of all color.

"Don't listen to her, Julian! She's mentally unstable!" Arthur roared, motioning frantically for the bodyguards.

Before the guards could cross the marble floor, Julian raised a single gloved hand, stopping them dead in their tracks with a glare of pure authority. He turned back to Arthur, his smile turning razor-sharp.

"I think," Julian said slowly, "we need to rewrite the wedding contract."

Arthur opened his mouth to protest, but the heavy front doors of the mansion suddenly blew wide open, revealing an unexpected visitor silhouetted in the rain.
