Chapter 4 - Darkness in the Foyer

The crystal chandelier flickered once, twice, and then died, plunging the opulent mansion foyer into near-total darkness save for the dim, ethereal glow of the storm outside. Shouts of alarm echoed from the bodyguards stationed near the perimeter. Arthur Sterling’s voice cut through the chaos, demanding emergency power be restored immediately.
Julian’s hand snapped out in the pitch black, grabbing Claire’s arm before she could be swept away in the confusion.
"Stay close to me," Julian ordered, his voice steady and calm despite the sudden ambush.
"Someone pushed the secondary safe on the landing," Elena’s voice called out from somewhere near the base of the stairs, sounding remarkably unbothered by the blackout. "They're trying to burn the physical receipts. Arthur is covering his tracks."
In the dim light of a lightning flash, Julian saw the silhouette of Arthur scrambling toward the grand staircase, ignoring his three favored daughters entirely as he fled upward. Claire tried to pull away, her green dress rustling against the marble.
"Let me go after him," Claire whispered urgently. "If he reaches the third-floor safe, my mother's will is gone forever."
"No," Julian replied, his grip tightening. "You are coming with me. We leave together, or not at all."
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed Julian’s shoulder from behind. One of the bodyguards, blinded by the darkness and acting on Arthur's prior standing orders, swung a heavy fist. Julian ducked fluidly, using his martial training to pivot and sweep the guard's legs out from under him. The man hit the marble floor with a resounding thud.
Elena flickred a heavy-duty tactical flashlight to life, cutting a stark beam through the gloom. The harsh white light illuminated the chaotic scene: the guard groaning on the floor, the three daughters huddled together in terror, and Arthur leaning over the second-floor balcony with a lit flare in his hand, glaring down with murderous intent.
"You should have just taken the bride I offered you, Julian," Arthur shouted down, his face twisted in madness. "Now, none of you leave this house alive."
May you like
Arthur hurled the burning flare directly down toward the pile of historic silk rugs at the foot of the stairs, right where Julian and Claire were standing.
