Chapter 13 - Descent into the City

The municipal drainage tunnel smelled of damp concrete, rust, and the metallic tang of the storm runoff rushing past their boots in a shallow, churning stream. Elena led the way with her tactical flashlight cutting a narrow, flickering beam through the cavernous concrete pipe, while Julian kept his hand on his injured shoulder, hiding the pain beneath a mask of absolute control. Claire walked right beside him, her long red hair tied back with a piece of twine, her green dress stained with mud and soot.
"We're three blocks away from the downtown financial district," Elena called back over the roar of the rushing water. "There's a maintenance hatch that opens directly into the underground parking garage of the Vance Global tower. But if Marcus has the building locked down, the biometric scanners at the freight elevator will trigger an immediate security lockdown."
Julian shook his head, stepping carefully over a rusted drainage grate. "Marcus won't be using standard biometric security tonight. He'll be in the subterranean executive vault trying to scrub the mainframe drives before the federal warrants are executed at dawn."
Claire looked up at Julian, the dim light of the flashlight catching the sharp angles of his face. "And how do we get into the vault if the biometric scanners are locked?"
Julian pulled a small, heavy silver key from the hidden pocket of his trousers—a key that looked entirely archaic compared to the digital age of corporate security.
"Because my grandfather built this tower fifty years ago," Julian replied quietly. "And before he trusted computers, he trusted steel and brass. There is a manual override built directly into the foundation wall behind the primary server racks."
They reached the end of the concrete pipe, where a heavy iron ladder ascended vertically into a dark, rusted hatchway. Elena pushed the hatch open cautiously, peering up into the cavernous shadows of the Vance Global underground parking garage. The vast subterranean space was eerily quiet, save for the distant hum of massive ventilation units and the intermittent dripping of water from the concrete ceiling.
Elena climbed up first, securing the perimeter with her tactical sidearm drawn before signaling back down to Julian and Claire.
Julian hoisted himself up through the hatch, gritting his teeth as the movement strained his wounded shoulder. He immediately reached down, extending a strong, calloused hand to pull Claire up into the garage.
As Claire's feet touched the concrete floor, the screech of tires echoed through the echoing garage. A pair of black armored corporate SUVs rounded the far corner of the parking level, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright, cutting straight through the dark and trapping Julian, Claire, and Elena in the open.
A familiar, sneering voice echoed from the lead vehicle's megaphone, bouncing off the concrete pillars.

"Well, well," Marcus Vance called out over the speakers, stepping out of the passenger door with a cold, triumphant grin. "Family reunion at midnight. I must admit, Julian, I thought you were smarter than walking straight into the lion's den."
