Chapter 11 - The Blast in the Catacombs

The concussive force of the explosion threw Julian and Claire against the damp stone wall of the subterranean corridor. Elena screamed a warning as thick, choking gray smoke rolled into the narrow passage, instantly obscuring the flashlight beam. Debris rained down from the ceiling, burying their escape route deeper into the catacombs.

Julian coughed violently, shaking off the falling stone chips and immediately reaching out into the dark. "Claire! Elena! Status!"

"I'm here!" Elena coughed, her voice echoing from a few feet ahead. "The backdraft cleared the debris blocking the wine cellar door, but the structural integrity of this entire wing is failing!"

Julian felt around blindly in the dust-filled dark until his hand brushed against the soft fabric of Claire’s green dress. He grabbed her arm, pulling her upright against him. She was shivering, covered in soot and plaster, but the fierce defiance in her green eyes had not faded an inch.

"Are you hit?" Julian demanded, his intense expression illuminated briefly by the sparks of an exposed electrical conduit dangling from the ruined ceiling.

"I'm fine," Claire gasped, wiping blood and dirt from her cheek. She clutched the leather ledger tightly to her chest; despite the blast, the book was miraculously intact. "They're not going to stop until this book is destroyed, are they?"

"They won't stop because this book proves that the current board of directors—not just Arthur—laundered billions through government defense contracts," Julian said grimly, drawing his weapon again as heavy footsteps approached from the blown-out gap behind them. "Move! Now!"

They sprinted through the remaining length of the stone corridor, bursting through a rotted wooden door into the cavernous, wine-cask-lined cellars beneath the mansion's greenhouse. The air here was damp, smelling of aged oak and fermenting grapes. Above them, through the glass panels of the greenhouse roof, the red and blue flashing lights of emergency vehicles still painted the stormy night sky, though the gunfire had temporarily ceased.

Elena was already forcing open a heavy iron storm door set into the floorboards, which led directly into the municipal drainage system. "Hurry! They're dropping thermal drones down the ventilation shafts!"

Julian pushed Claire toward the open iron doors, but as he turned to cover their rear, a red laser sight flickered across his chest.

Out of the smoke-filled archway stepped a lone figure in black tactical gear, the face hidden behind a carbon-fiber helmet. The assassin raised an assault rifle with chilling precision, ignoring Elena entirely and locking the crosshairs directly on Claire.

Julian didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon and fired twice, but the assassin stepped aside with impossible speed, returning fire. A bullet grazed Julian’s shoulder, tearing through his black shirt and drawing a sharp line of crimson.

Claire screamed, lunging forward to push Julian down behind an oak wine cask just as a sustained burst of automatic fire splintered the heavy wood into a million pieces.

As Julian pressed his hand against his bleeding shoulder, his eyes locked onto the assassin's belt buckle, where a distinct corporate insignia gleamed in the dim light—the exact logo of Vance Global's internal security division.
